Subject: part-time 4X4 not disengaging IP: Logged
Message: I just bought a used 99 Dakota 4X4 5.2 with part-time 4 wheel drive. My problem is when I disengage 4 wheel drive with the floor shift lever I still experience wheel hop while turning on dry pavement even though only the rear wheels are engaged! When I shift to part-time 4WD on snow or ice, I have 4 wheel drive. I have noticed that the dash light "part time 4wd" does not come on each time I shift to 4WD and has blinked once. I'm new to 4WD - any ideas or suggestions on the problem?

Message: dont worry about the dash light. i just got a new transfer case in my 98 and the tech told me that sometimes the conector is loose and doesn't turn on when fourwheel drive is engaged.
as for the 4x4 not disengaging, how long does it stay engaged for, i can tell i am back in 2wd after about a hundred feet of driving...
good luck

Message: It doesn't appear to disengage completely. I start the day in 4 wheel drive to get out of my snowcovered driveway and shift to 2WD on the highway. When I arrive at work some 25 miles later, I know 4WD isn't engaged because my back tires are spinning on snow. However, when I attempt to pull into a parking space on dry pavement, the tires chirp and the truck lurches as though it is in 4WD!!

Message: Tony,
You may have a anti-spin (posi) rearend...I have the same symptom...totally normal. If you turn tight, the rear end hops because the wheels are trying to turn the same speed. Our anti-spin is actually really good if you keep the fluid fresh, so that's probably what you are having.
Have a friend watch your rear wheels when you're making a sharp turn in 2wd...see if they don't hop due to the locking rearend.
Hope this helps!
