Message: Does anyone know what kind of turbo's I could use on my '97 dodge dakota...I've got a 318, I've found that my brother that has a '86 mustang built a twin turbo kit for around a grand and i would like to do the same...but i wasn't sure on what turbo's i needed...if anyone knows could i use a T3 off a turbo coupe...or would it be to difficult to modify!

Message: you could build one with two garret T-3 turbos, but you will have to make a set of manifolds, intake, intercooler, and then get all the electronics to tune it... most people that build their own get into it for minumum of $3000.00 and up to $6k for a really good kit. the engine management system on the dodges does not recognise boost like the ford does, no mass air flow sensor... so good luck..

Message: You would be saving aloot of headaches by finding a kit. like buzz says getting the turbos is the easy part making them work is another.

Message: you will need a ar ratio of .96 exhaust and .86 on compressor for 8# boost at 4800 rpm then the other goodies as buzz has said dodge uses a map instead of a mas sensor so for that you will need a fuel managenent unit, a high vol./pressure fuel pump,a blow off valve at least 26# injectors plumbing, oil lines for turbo guages boost, fuel pressure, airfuel ratio, exhaust temp, manifold are easy i built a box designed after duners project. then tied the 2 exhaust pipes together made an extention for the turbo. oh ya you will need a waste gate if the turbo doesnt already have one i got all the parts off e-bay for under 600.00$ and some time. i built an intercooler you dont have to mine is a water to air using a 220gal hr water pump home built heat transfer unit and a air condition condensor for a radiator have fun

Message: Get a copy of Corky Bell's "Maximum Boost". It is the holy grail of home-built turbo tuners.
As for the MAP sensor, a 4.7V zener diode wired between the signal wire on the sensor and ground will keep the MAP sensor from seeing boost. I know of some guys have tried to use a MAP sensor from 2.2 Turbos without luck. The zener clamp method works everytime.
Why do you need twin turbo? Most of the fastest large displacement guys (ie, V8's) are using single turbo setups. It's a lot cheaper and easier to build. With twin turbos, you have to synchronize the wastegates which takes a lot of trial and error. I would personally go with a single T-63. It will support up to 700hp in air flow and has an extremely low-boost threshold (ie, very little lag).

Message: But is he going to find a T63 sitting in a junkyard somewhere? I really doubt it...
Provide him with realistic answers based on what is "likely" or "actually" in the junkyards now. I've never seen a T63 in a junkyard, and I've looked at hundreds of turbos around the metro Atlanta area. Considering the amount of wrecked cars created every year here in Atlanta, I'd say it's a good cross section as to what he'll find. Personally, I'd look in the VW/Audi cars in the lots, and maybe the late 80's Chryslers LeBarons as well. Bound to find a bunch of T3's and hybrid T3/4's.

Message: audis and vw's use kkk turbos or 16g(I beleive) when I wanted a 1.8t passat I always used to read the kkk are two small to provide optimum boost for the 1.8t
I'd look for a t/3 or t/4 as thats what some of the japanese turno cars used. or a turbo off of a powerstroke diesel cummings diesel gm 6.5 etc. there has to be some of those lyeing around.
larger turbo at lower boost will normally create more power then a small turbo turned way up.

Message: T3/T4 would be the best bet, IMHO. I didn't realize that the 1.8T K was too small for Passats. The stock turbo setup can easily push 250 hp on those cars (up from 170/180). I'd say that's plenty of power. The K04 swap can easily net 300 HP with the appropriate other goodies to go along with it.

Message: twins are a pain i used a single t3/t4 hybrid for my project and i own a 2002 passat 1.8t it runs great but on hot days lag is really bad but once past 2200 you can feel it come on i was impressed with the power output in a car that size the wife loves it. i stick to the dak something about wrapping v8 american power around yourself and turning it on

Message: oh by the way the t63 in my opinion is way to big for a dailey driver you could never utilize it to its full potential the larger injector used would make use a lot of gas regulating that in itself would be a pain and make it unstreetable the computer would not be able to trim back the injectors enough to work well when off boost. the map will not see boost it only works on vacuum so the sensor closes (it pressurized at boost) and tells the computer the engine is at idle therfore trimming the injectors back to idle settings as a result there is an idle volumn of fuel at max boost this is very bad lol. one more thing screw the junkyards the heart of the project warrants a good rebuilt or new turbo spend the cash and just say to yourself im saving money by doing it myself
