Subject: Dakota help!!!! IP: Logged
Message: Im in search of some Advice!!
I have a 98 dodge dakota, 4x4, 5.2
Driving the highway.. Engine just died.
No warnings, No symptoms.
Engine cranks, belts as what I can see intact.
I have power to the msd coil, it turns on for about 2 seconds.. then the power cuts out to the coil. Any advice on what to look for first, Or what would cause the computer to shut down the coil???
Plugs are fairly new, Plugs fairly new.

Message: It is only supposed to have power to the coil for the first two seconds. Check your fuel pump pressure I bet you have none. While someone is cranking the engine depress the schrader valve on left hand fuel rail and see if fuel comes shooting out.

I did not realize that the coil receives power for only two seconds!!
How does power get to the coil and then to the distributor after the first two seconds?

Message: Good question.. dakaty
Coil tested fine, and even swapped the MSD back to original mopar coil just incase. I replaced plugs, wires, cap rotor. I just replaced fuel filter, Serpantine belt. All that was past due and needed replaced anyway while im in the MODE OF TEAR INTO TRUCk!!
And when cranking I do have correct pressure at the valve and inline. Good suggestion, I didn't think of that.
I have a stock Computer and a performance computer. Both work fine. I reset the pc, and flashed it from dodge.
There machine is fully able to talk and communicate with the computer.
Installed it. Still no go.
I removed and reset my Jet modules.
Tried with module in and cleared. As well as with the module out and cleared.
After trying to start the truck a few times. Computer is not reporting any errors????
I thought that odd?? Not sure though.
Anybody have any other suggestions?

Message: First check for fuel like posted above then check for spark by pulling out a spark plug and ground it to the block and crank the engine, most common probs-no fuel=fuel pump,no spark=pickup coil,or module in distributor or maybe even a map sensor,Im not actually sure of the components in a 98

Message: Dakaty: When the PCM sees a rpm signal then it puts power to the ASD relay (auto shut down) which in turn provides power to the coil and fuel pumpand various other items.
Like art says check the spark, fuel and compression. If you have all those it has to run. Unless just badly flooded or somthing came out of time.

Message: Not sure if this will help, but try checking the oil pressure sending switch. If it goes bad, the engine thinks there isn't a safe amount of oil pressure and shuts down to save the engine from possible damage. I'm not sure what the new Daks have on them, but my '88 did it to me on a fishing trip. Luckily, I had some friends along, and we just switched the boat to their truck and left mine on the roadside for the tow truck. Fishing is too important to let something like the sudden death of your sole means of transportation get in the way!

Message: Well, after a week I gave up. I took the dakota to the Dealership.. ARGH!!!! YES I DID THE ALMIGHTY BAD THING!!!
They determined that they had no clue.
Just for giggles a young mechanic decided to take a pcm from a 99 durango and put it in my truck..
My truck started with the 99 durango pcm.
Then he put my pcm in the durango.
The durango started. Swapped them back..
My truck will not start with my pcm???
How the ???? Ummm?? The diags is able to talk to my pcm fine. It works fine in the durango.
But won't work in my truck!!!
So it's now been 2 weeks. And DODGE has no clue. of what caused it.. or why its acting the way it is!!!!
** sigh **

Message: I have the exact symtoms...except I put the new PCM on and it didn't help. My dash code shows no error but a mechanic hooked up to his diagnostics and showed code for the asd. He had no idea what is going on. I guess I will have to go to a dealer and see what they can find. Let me know if you find anything?

Message: Update from the dakota from..... %$%#$%#$%
I currently Have 66,000 miles.
I ended up with a new PCM That's been updated.
Removed the jet chip. Switched out 12 sensors. Finally got my truck to work properly for about 3 weeks.
I decided to put the jet chip back in.
Bad idea.. Truck died about 3 days later.
I removed it, Reset the Ram and the PCM from manufacturer.
Truck is now running fine.
Talked to the jet chip manufacturer.
They claim it's not possible for there chip to do damage or alter things in that manner.
So upon there request they asked me to send it to them for diags.. It's been 3 weeks.. No answer yet.
For me it seems the chip did damage or altered a reading from a sensor, That possibly did damage.
I'm not sure, But thats my guess...
Good luck with your trucks!!

Message: I just bought a used dakota 5.9 R/T. i drove it home and i heard this noice that sounded like it was coming from the windshield, i didnt feel any cold air coming into the cab. When i got home i sprayed the windshield with some water and then i got into the truck and felt around the windshield to see if any water got in but didn't. I drove the truck around for alittle bit around my neighbor hood and i thought about lookin under the hood to see. i did that and a pcv valve was missing, so i bought one from auto zone and put it in. i cranked it and it fired but killed right on over. i did it again and gave it some gas and it started smokin real bad. would the timin be off or something??????? i aint goin to take to the dealership in my town cause they've been workin on my dads truck for over 3 years now to try and fix it.
