Subject: 321 vs 392 gear IP: Logged
Message: My dad is buying me a 2003 CC Sport Plus with the
4.7L. I want to get the 3:92 rear end cause I hear that is
the gear to get but he says "im not building a race truck
and I will lose gass mileage." Funny thing is
Eric(kotaon20s) told me when he upgraded to 392 from
355, he GAINED 2mpg. So for what other reasons are
the 392 gears the ones to get?

Message: If you live in an area with many hills or mountains, the 3.92's give your truck better pulling power. They aren't just for racing. They don't put as big of a strain on the motor while pulling and starting off. If you are going to do a lot of road driving they will make your truck use more gas (because your motor has to turn faster to go the same speed as with 3.55) But if your going to be puttin around town or along a country road alot I would go with 3.92.

Message: Most people say that they get better gas mileage with the 3.92 than the other factory ratios. The main reason you should get them is that the CC weighs alot and the 3.92s will get things moving easier.
The other reason is that most people mod thier truck sooner or later and it would be cheapier to get it now. You'll be kicking yourself later for sure. If you don't get 3.92s make sure you atleast get a 3.55 w/LSD. A LSD is a must and don't even consider 3.21s if thier even available.

Message: I think the "dad" is buying his son the '03 (things were never that easy for me, even had to pay my own way through college). Sounds like dad does not want the kid hot rodding too much. By the sounds of it, I'd say his fears are well founded (you only really appreciate those things which you earn yourself).
My advise would be to buy your own wreck and learn to maintian it yourself.
Flame on.
BTW, my '03, 4.7L 3.92 LSD gets terrible milage. I would put no belief that the 3.92 gets better milage than the 3.55... it makes no sense.

Message: If you only have the choice between the 3.21 vs. the 3.92, then there isn't a choice at all(unless you commute a 100miles everyday). Even if you do a lot of highway driving the fun you'll have with the 3.92s over the 3.21s will be well worth the .5mpg you'd lose from the long distance driving. The rpm difference at 65mph is less than 400 rpms thats only 2 little lines on the tack for a lot more fun. Just think most heavy weights(quad cabs & 4x4 CC) or performance minded people jump all the way up to 4.56s.

Message: I have a 2000 dakota w/ the 3.21s. it has the V6 and manual trans. I do an equal amount of city and highway driving and wished I stepped up to the 3.55s, but bought the truck from the lot and didn't know it was an option. Do like the low RPM when cruising on the higway however (about 2000 at 70 MPH).

Message: As far as I know, the '03 4.7L auto has the 3.55's standard and the 3.92's optional. My '03, 4x4, SLT+, 4.7L, 3.92 LSD, CC was hard to track down because 99% of the trucks on the dealer lots had 3.55's standard.
The 4x2 V6 would be 3.21 standard. According to www.kbb.com the 3.55's are std option with the 4.7L engine.
So your arguement is now 3.55's vs 3.92's. If you're towing large loads (over 5K lbs) then you should opt for the 3.92. If you want to do better burnouts or think you'll be faster off the line then definately get the 3.55's 'cause your young a$$ will get in too much trouble.
I have the set-up you're after (except in 4x4) and the 2mpg bump in milage over the 3.55's is pure BS.

Message: Just purchased a 318 w/3.92 gear. Definately different than the Chevy I totaled. But going to change to a 3.21 rear gear. Engine at 2580 at 65MPH, that sucks, I liked the Chevy at 1842 @ 65 MPH and the quietness in the engine. Yes, 120 miles both ways to work. The 318 cannot be much different than the 307 at pulling away from the light with the higher gear. Chirp the 2.75/60's in 2nd and 3rd, little Dodge should do the same. Right?

Message: The chevy's have lower internal gears in the tranny, at least for the auto's they do, that could account for some of the ability to pull those gears.
