Subject: 3rd cats on 03' RT IP: Logged
Message: I need help understanding more about the third cats on the 03 rt's. Correct me if I am wrong, they are removed when you replace the exhaust manifold with headers right? The guys at KRC Performance said the when you replace them you will need what they call a dual cat box so the your check engine light will not come on. Is all of this true? Can someone please expand upon this subject? Thanks in advance!

Message: O.k. first of all the 3rd cat is not touched when you replace just the headers. The pre-cats are removed along with the stock exhaust manifold. These are the cats that have 02 sensors before and after them. With your new headers the pre-02 sensors are still used, but the 2 post o2 sensors are plugged into the cat box.
When you get headers it is a good idea to go ahead and replace the remainder of the exhaust (3rd cat, muffler, pipe, y-pipe which comes with the headers, etc.). Get a highflow cat (carsound, catco, etc. 3" in and out) and replace all your pipe with 3" along with a new 3" muffler.
You will pass emmissions and have a bad ass exhuast.
