Subject: 16x8 weight IP: Logged
Message: Does anyone know offhand, or know where I could find out, the weight of the 16x8 wheels for daks?
Tryin to decide between the R/T wheels and these, though the R/T's look really nice, the 16's I think look really good too with a set of 275's on them, and I know the R/T's are some beefy mofo's, I'm hoping the 16x8's are a good deal lighter?

Message: Honestly, don't bother with the 16"s, performance tires aren't nearly as wide of a selection as the 17" or 15" sizes for our diameter. Offroad there's a metric buttload available for the 16" though.

Message: I have some 16x8's and am probably going to get a set of BFG 265/50-16's. Right now I have a set of 235/65-15's on a set of 15x7's. Talk about a lack of traction.

Message: I'm not sure of the weight, but I can tell you
when I replaced the factory 16X8 wheels and
GoodYear LS tires on my '02 Quad with factory
RT wheels and Toyo tires I could tell they were
a lot heavier.
It made a noticable difference in the way my
QuadCab drives. With the RT wheels it feels
like I need to replace the shocks (and my truck
only has 6500 miles).
I've got a spare RT wheel I can weigh if you're
interested. You might want to check Ebay for
"dakota wheels" and email someone selling a
set of 16X8 takeoffs. I'm sure they'd be able to
weigh one for you. You could tell them you're
trying to figure out shipping costs....
Hope this helps,
Lemmers

Message: Yeah I've heard the R/T wheels are much heavier than the 16x8's. It cost me about $22.50 to ship a set of wheels I bought. So $90.00 for a set of 4.

Those 16's look a LOT ligher :)

Message: I dont think the ones sold by capital are OEM, i think they might be reproductions. I bought their very first set of polished rt's back in '00 for my first dak, and they were WAY out of balance

Message: Yeah they are reproductions, the painted and chromed ones as well, I wasn't planning to get them there, but they did tell me that's the weight of theirs, and I just assumed the OEM's were fairly close in weight.

Message: OK, I've got a few weights for you. I weighed a
factory RT wheel and a factory 16x8 with a
255-65-16 GoodYear Eagle LS mounted on it.
Bare RT wheel--29 lbs
16x8 w/GoodYear LS--50lbs
If you can find out what a 255-65-16 GoodYear
weighs you'll have the 16x8 rim weight. You
might want to give the Tire Rack a call.
I'll be removing the RT wheels on my Quad
and putting on the stock 16x8 wheels and tires
in the next couple of weeks preparing for the
dreaded Wisconsin winter. I'll weigh one of
the RT wheels with a 255-60-17 Toyo Proxes
mounted on it.
The overall height of my RT wheels and tires
is 29.1", same as the stock set-up. And
although tire wieghts vary a bit, it will still give
you a good idea what the weight difference
between wheels is.
Hope this helps,
Lemmers

Message: 29 lbs doesn't sound too bad really.
I wouldn't think the 16 is under 20 lbs....and 9lbs per wheel = 36 lbs difference, I could live with that. On the smaller wheel I would have a bigger tire, so the R/T with tires, vs. the 16 with tires, wouldn't be a LOT of difference.
Thanks man, a lot of help, you have been.
Now I just need either a 16" weight or a tire weight.

Message: bigger rims always look better, but I've always heard that every pound you add to a wheel has the same effect as 7 extra pounds of vehicle weight. If you change your rims and they all weigh an extra pound, you just gained 28 pounds of vehicle weight as far as the engine can tell.So you must decide what you're committed to:good looks or performance.I'm somewhere in the middle.I know the standard crappy little steel rims are probably the lightest, but I wouldn't have less than the alloy 15's on it.And I couldn't imagine how much power a set of 20's would rob.
