Subject: 4.7 Fan removal

I tried my darndest to remove the fan with a wrench and a hammer last weekend. How did everyone keep the pump from rotating. I do not have a spanner wrench and would prefer to not have to make one if I can get away with it...

It is a '00 with 74k miles on it so it is ON there... I do not want to spray wd-40 or anything like that so close to my belt...

easy one,
start the motor, and slowly lower the wrench onto the nut holing it on, once the wrench grabs, it will spin until the wrench hits something and it should break it loose hehehehehe

sorry, I just wanted to bump this question before it was lost in limbo somewhere.


Looking at the motor, which way do you turn the nut?

have you tried having someone hold the blade as you crank on it?

THe blade is on the viscous coupler. I need to hold the water pump pulley as even the belt is slipping on it...

As far as I can tell I would have to turn the nut counter-clockwise to remove it. (place the wrench on the nut from above and hit it towards the drivers side).

I stuck a #2 phillips screw driver thru one of the spanner wrench hole far enough that when I turned the wrench it kept the pump from moving.

Hope I can help on this one, you've helped me here in the past.

I sprayed Silicone spray, or something like that right in the groove, came right off.

And NO, I didn't have any belt squeling!

I used a pipe wrench, then a 2x4 about a foot long placed perpendicular to the wrench, that was on the nut. Tapped it a few times briskly, sharp taps (no too forceful) with a hammer, and it came right off.

So, if you get a little lube one small portion of the belt anyway, No big Deal, soubt one apot will make it slip, just use a little hose in the noosle, mine worked.

It's Large, I used an 18 inch Cresent wrench to do mine. It is a typical right handed thread. I hope this helps.

Hey Lynn,
I had to buy a wrench for it, I ended up buying a crescent/adjustable wrench. They had a Craftsman 15" deal for $40 or a Crescent brand (no warranty) 12" that was almost as wide as the 15" for only $25 after tax and it was big enough, I just wanted to re-check on where to stick the screwdriver. I thought it was like other fans where you put the screwdriver across to of the water pump screws, but I see what your talking about with the spanner wrench holes, and well..... That's what I'm about to do.

Ok I have the fan off. Hehehehe, you'll have to excuse my ingenuity on this one, but I ended up putting 2 drywall screws into the spanner wrench holes and using a screwdriver for leverage. But hey, it's off right?, and I didn't have to use a hammer hahaha.
But what's holding the pulley on? Is it just a press fit onto the w-pump?

It's pressed onto the water pump. I thought it would come off, but someone mentioned it was pressed on and I have been 5,000 miles with it off. Good Idea the screws. I tried a 12" cresent when I did mine and it wouldn't quite open up far enough.

Yates is right, it's pressed on, but don't worry about it coming off. All the KJs with the 3.7 sister to our engine come from the factory with no viscous fan or nut on the threads.

Thanks guys.
I've noticed, that the temp gauge really fluctuates now, gets up to about half, then the elec. fan kicks on. I plan on going with the 180 in a couple weeks, will that keep it at a more stable temp?
DC should have just built these trucks with electric fans (good ones) to begin with, can't wait to see what ot does for my gas mileage.

The lower temp stat will help. I still have my 160 in and it never goes past about 11:30 although I need to put in my 180 so I'll quit tripping the MIL. Having the A/C on helps too, just turn the temp setting up.

Well I got mine off too. I used a craftsman strap wrench to hold the pulley after bendimg my #1 phillips into an arc.... This worked great, jsut take off the serpentine and get teh strap wrench on there. i rested it on the tensioner puley and just gave the 15" wrench all my might...

Did it again last weekend (removed 4.7 fan) on a friends 02-4.7.

I put a screwdriver thru on of the pulley holes and rested it against the pump housing, sprayed the nut, tapped the wrench with a hammer, and viola, off it came! You don't have to remove the serpentine belt, but i worked well for Chris,

If your truck has A/C it also has an electric fan that will turn on at 200F. Removing the clutch fan does make a big difference... You can FEEL it...

I swapped the T-stat teh same day I did the HO cams so I can only say I think so... But the truck did run MUCH better after that wrenching session...

Ok guys I'm in Kansas City and its getting cold here. What exactly will taking my fan off accomplish? Will it cause problems next summer when its 105* out? Didn't Dodge put it there for a reason? Just wanting more info. Thanks.

I don't think Kansas City is ANY Hotter than Houston/Galveston area! It's been two summers already, no probs. AND, if you think it's a prob., take the 30secs and put the fan back on!, the engine spin tightens it!

I do have the 180stat, easy change out.

Chris, As the Rat said,

A/C on, fan is ON, even at start-up w/ a cold motor!

CW, and a few others have put a thermostat into the system, and wire it to come on a little earlier w/o the A/C, or stock PCM temp control.

I would think a search should do it, I think I even remember wiring diagrams, part #'s, etc.

Personally, never saw a reason for it yet, even pulling my catamaran here in Houston/Galveston TX., as the gauge never gets over 1/3 from the left.

Good luck with the search, I'm sure it's an inexpensive and easy, quick fan mod to put in another thermostat.

Read the thread that I posted from moparchat up above.

If you're going to intentionally compromise the integrity of the factory cooling system, then you have to accept some responsibility in making sure that you don't cook the motor. That means monitoring the temperature gauge and using whatever is necessary to keep the temperature within reasonable bounds. For the record, 210 is not that hot for an engine...... it's in the moparchat thread.

My truck is goofy then, even with the air on (or off) this summer, on the highway (85 mph) 95 degrees out my truck would get over 210 with the clutch fan as well...

It just doesn't seem to run as cool as most others trucks.

Maybe more than goofy-sounds like your factory stat may be bad. Go spend that $12-$13 for the 180 and some antifreeze and see what happens.
