Subject: Front-end noise? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 quad cab 4.7l and when I make a hard turn sometimes I hear a clunking noise coming from the front end. I heard it maybe it is the ball joints but figured I ask hear also.

Message: I had the same problem and also thought of the ball joints. Turns out I had bad hub bearings. Mine only did it on a hard right though.

Message: I had the clunk also. It was upper ball joints at 21,000mi's on a 2000. The dealer replaced both at no charge under warranty. Now clunk gone...I happy!

Message: I have the same problem but last time I took it to the dealer he claimed he couldn't hear it. Any ideas I can tell him? Should I show him all of these posts about this noise and then he might believe me? I even took him for a ride and still couldn't hear.

Message: I'm glad you asked that question because the dealership told me the same thing after they test drove it. Only thing is I had already diagnosed it and pinpointed the location of the noise (upper ball joints). My exact words to the service advisor who called me was "Do you want me to come over there and embarass your mechanic by finding the problem for him?"...His response was maybe we will take it out for another drive and see what we can find...And lo and behold when he called me back they had a miraculous diagnosis of a left upper bj with excessive play and we will replace the right side because it has a little play also. You see I worked in auto service for 15 years and I learned as a mechanic as well as a customer now is that you literally should have your diagnosis already done by the time you get to the dealership, tell them your symptoms and see what they say. If they come back with the wrong answer you tell them what the correct answer is. The bottom line is you simply must find someone with the knowledge that you can trust to help you find the problem before you get to the dealership. (Especially warranty work) Thanks again for asking, I have been busting to get that off of my chest(hehe).
