Subject: 4.7 Cat wisdom? IP: Logged
Message: Can anyone provide some insight on why or why not to remove the 3rd cat on a 2001 4.7? No sensors to mess with, etc. For those of you that have removed it, did you gut it and put it back, or did you remove it, and clamp in a straight pipe? I'm open to all sorts of comments and suggestions here, in part so that I can make a choice, and in part so that we have a good collection of ideas about it. Thanks.

Message: Take it out and put a piece of pipe in. It is a good cheap mod to do. Lets the engine breath. If you get a cat back at the same time you will really know the difference as the muffler is pretty restrictive as well but not as bad as the third cat.

Message: my carsound cat seemed to make it pull
harder in the upper RPM's. I think my low end
is hurt by the 3" catback I have. you can just
cut the stock one off, it is right above part of
the transmission mount (?) so its kinda hard
to get in there and weld, but the guy did fine on
mine, he just cut a little extra pipe out and
replaced it.

Message: Here is my problem: My wife... she has great ears for the way my truck runs... she typically tells me she hates the sound but the day I did the cams (that she does no know about) she noticed it sounded different... then the day I did the intake same thing... Is this something she will hear? I live in CT and should be getting a 2 yr inspection soon... at which point I think the 3rd cat is GONE....

Message: Brent - taking off the third cat could only increase your milage, and it shouldn't do anything to the computer because there are no O2 sensors on it, only the first two....
Chris - I don't know what to tell you yet, it should sound different (I'll know soon, but I couldn't tell you how soon) but then again the only truck I've ever heard with a gutted/removed cat only had one cat to begin with.

Message: Chris,
Hate to tell ya, but yes I think she will notice it. My 4'10" mexican wife noticed from around the building while out side doing yard work.
She came around the corner watched me get out of the truck and asked if i'd snagged the exhaust on something cause it was louder than normal.
Have fun,
