I recently bought a new Dakota Quad with a 4.7 Mag V-8 with an auto trany. I would like to install duals coming off the cat. How would this affect the idle and highway performance on a 4.7? I can get the job done for about $250.00, Would it be worth the performance and sound I would be picking up? I'm a "child" of the late 1950's and early 1960's when "glass packs" and "hollywoods" ruled the streets. Would I be disappointed? Any recommendations on mufflers?

You wont be disappointed, How loud do you want it? Gibson is pretty quiet on the highway but they sound good at low speed and idle (low rumble).

There are allot of the other guys on here that have done that. Maybe they will post. Just keep the pipes at the same size so not to lose to much low end torque.
And I do remember the old cherry bombs. Everybody had them back then.

People in Montana still use Cherry Bombs. Time to time I see -- hear rather -- open headers too. That's montana for ya.

I really like my MBRP and my dad made the comment the sound that comes from it is what he and his buddies were trying for over three decades ago. A dual should sound a lot meaner though, mine is only a single.

I had custom duals installed from the cat. on back.
I had flow master mufflers installed with stainless tips. Didnt notice much performance increase, but they sound great. Cost: $325.00

2000 QC, 4.7, Jet performance chip, K&N filter, duals and looking for more.

I have a '00 4.7 CC, auto. I bought the SUV Perf Flowmaster muffler, single in and dual 2 1/2 out.
It did seem to lose some low end. I do like the sound, not loud but it does have a nice tone. A few weeks later I made a homemade air intake using PVC and Fernco with a K&N drop in. That addition did wake it up......
Gas mileage went up a little, maybe a mile per gallon.

Single 3" Gibson seems to be the best from performance standpoint on a stock 4.7. If you must have duals keep the pipes small like 1.5 inch and then put a big tip on it at the rear. If you run dual 3" or largers all the way back and put dual mufflers on it you will lose a lot low end torque. You will also get a droneing noise at HWY speeds into the cabin. If you do the true duals all the way back and use 3" tell us if it drones in the cabin!!! I think alot of people here has selective memory. They will not tell you that it drones at 55-80 MPH and that it will require that you run the radio on long road trips to keep from going crazy! If you live in a state that uses salt in the winter time wait for the fatory exhaust to rust off.

I have the mbrp duals and it sounds awesome. The price was $500.00 for stainless steel, 350.00 for alumanized, about the same for gibsons duals. I was going to get the gibson s.s. duals, but you have to remove your spare tire and towing hitch (which I didnt like). The mbrp is also not supposed to lose any low end torque, because of the 2 1/4" tailpipes (gibon is 2 1/2"). Check out http://www.premier-automotive.net/. Jonas has the best prices. Call him to and he will tell you the difference between the mbrp and gibson, and he sells both.

I have a 97 R/C with a 3.9L that I put a High-Flow Cat and single in dual out Flowmaster muffler. The sound is nice and it's quiet in the cab even with the radio off! LOL
At idle and crusing it sounds like a V-8 nice growl just what I was looking for.

I have a 91 pre mag 318 and would like to run duals on it as well as some hooker headers. I have looked around alot and have not found anybody that makes a high flow muffler and dual exhaust for it if any of you guys have some ideas. It is the same body style as the 92-96 daks so i dont know if the systems or mufflers would work. I have considered gibson hooker and flowmaster but im not wanting something that will be to loud in the cab or on the rouad i dont want to be herd from a mile and a half away. I just want a performance gain and a nice deep throaty sound not cheap like a mustangs! and a performance gain if possible.

Ok since you were the "child of the 50's and 60's" I'm sure you want your ride to sound beefy and not lose low end torque like tony597fitter stated. Get the MBRP cat dual exhaust setup you will love it and your truck will too!

I just put MBRP split duals with the 14" stainless muffler on. a couple weeks ago I put the K&N Gen II induction on and a noticable increase in power with each. I got a 2000 4x4 4.7 regular cab 5spd 3.92 LSD axle. The MBRP wont work with the factory trailer hitch no matter what they tell ya (Unless you make custom rear hangers and then they are 5" below the rear bumper.) There is .5" clearance around the spare tire. It has the perfect sound from the outside, but the noise does droan in the cab under 2000 rpm which is most of the time.

I put on a $24.00 thrush glass pack and left the rest stock and it sounds great .I’m not sure how much HP/TQ it gained but it sure didn’t lose any.

OK you guys, remember basic math. Do you remember what "pi" is for? As in 3.1416x pipe diameter = area of the enclosed circle? Meaning that a single 3" pipe will flow significantly more than 2, 2" pipes. The most important thing is to eliminate sharp bends, so try to get mandrel bent pipes, and don't look for them as "stock" pieces. And I bought my '02 CC 4.7 with a towing pkg and a full size spare, so I must have wanted those right where they are. If I modify the exhaust, it will have to be with the understanding that those features are undisturbed. Happy truckin',I do love my Dak!

Uh Dave, you might want to refresh your math skills. The area of a circle is pi*D²/4:

1 2½" pipe = 4.91 in²
1 3" pipe = 7.07 in²
2 2" pipes = 6.28 in²
2 2¼" pipes = 7.95 in²
2 2½" pipes = 9.82 in²
2 3" pipes = 14.14 in²

So, a single 3" pipe will flow significantly more than a single 2.5" and a little more than dual 2", but less than dual 2¼" and much less than dual 2½". If you want to keep near the stock cross sectional area, it looks like dual 2" would be close.

Dave, dual 2" theoretically only flows 13% more than a single 3". Nowhere near double.

I'd be skeptical of cutting the Cats off and then putting on a high flow exhaust. Sure the sound is good, but on my 3.9L with a gutted cat and then duals; it killed the low end power.

The sound is definently better, but with the Cat chamber still there, it sounds like a 460 Ford in the cab. When I'm really on the throttle, it is somewhat obnoxious at higher RPM's, its has the blat of a 4 cyliner with a 4" fartpack.
