Subject: What's up with my MPG?? IP: Logged
Message: '01 QC 4x4 with 4.7L When I fill up, I get about 200 miles out of the top half of the tank, and about 100 from the bottom half. I know there is a few gallons unaccounted for when at E, and I keep the same driving conditions throughout.
Anyone else notice this??

Message: yeah it's pretty non-linear like that. from what I can figure once the needle is past E, there's still another good 100km (60 miles?)left in the tank (20-25L anyhow).

Message: When your light comes on (if you have one) it's between 4-5 gallons left in the tank. If you track your mileage all the time, you'll know how much you have left depending on the total miles on tank. I never look at the gauge anymore because it's too innaccurate.

Message: I realize that, but why am I getting double the miles out of the top half of the tank?
From Full-half=200 miles.
From Half-empty=100 miles.

Message: If I remember correctly the shape of the gas tank or the position of the fuel guage sensor causes the sensation that you use more gas after the tank is 1/2 full or less. Lots of people get fooled by their guages.

Message: no, your mileage isnt changing. your guage (just like the rest of ours) goes down faster on the bottom side because it isnt a flat rate guage. In other words, The top 1/4 represents maybe 5.5 gallons, while the bottom 1/4 represents maybe 3.5 gallons. Thats about what I figure mine at. Once you are pointing straight at the E line, you have ~4 gallons left. Figure your mileage on every tank and watch your trip odometer to figure what you got in your tank. The guage is only good for a reference.

Message: nate,
You just said what I said, only with more wording. The gauge is not all that accurate. Check MPG, then figure from there. Sheesh, some people...

Message: i think the axel ratios are why we are all getting different gas milage. i wouldn't trade my 3.92 for better milage though..its the only reason my truck accelerates at all.

Message: I don't understand how my truck has gotten 19 MPG the last couple of times??? The trip I take is usually 235 miles one way. My truck has the 3.92 Rear axle too. The only add-ons I have have are a flowmaster delta 50 muffler, and A drop in K&N air filter.

Message: I got 352 miles out of my last tank driving at 70MPH, which came out to 22 gallons. I have 33" tires, so I'm really going faster and further than indicated. 352 divided 22 equals 16MPG, I think it's like 40 more miles that I'm really getting out of this tank full, so that would put me close 18MPG.

Message: I put 69 Liters in my truck tonight, I had 277 miles on the trip-o-meter. Thats 18.228 gallons.
75% of my driving is done on the (I know screw the Auto-Bahn) Auto-Bahn. With the average speed being 107 MPH (no not KPH), with spikes in speed to 130 MPH. I have the 4.7, 5 speed Sport, with 3.92's. For those that don't believe anything they don't do, put your boots on for security Linus.
Now 277 divided by 18.228 equals 15.196 MPG, I'm very happy. Considering I don't have my Tonneau Cover on any more, I had to send it back cause it tore. I'm waiting on a new one.
If that helps your fuel measuring stick for yours good, if not oh-well I tried.
Later,
My VW Killer Lynn
