Subject: Vibration @ 65! IP: Logged
Message: hey yall! Got a werid situation. I hit 65 and my damn dak is freakin shakin. Ive had the damn tires balanced like 5 times. I have also added 4 new rancho shocks. THe shaking hasnt gone away. I even checked my ball joints for the steering column, there still solid. THe tires im riding on are farely new, their michellins. Anybody know whats goin on?

Message: Check your driveshaft. It's probably out of round. The exact same thing happened to me. Got 4 new Michelins and then the vibration at 65 mph. I also had tires checked. They were fine. Then put truck on a rack and watched the driveshaft spin in idle. It was out of round, so had it rebuilt and the vibration went away.

Message: It might be something as simple as U-joints, I had the same thing at 75. That fixed my problem.

Message: I fought this problem for more than a year, I changed tires, rims (for looks) I changed the u-joints and had the driveshaft balanced no fix. I then remembered back to my muscle car days and checked the tranny mount sure enough. completely severed from the support. My truck has 105k mi on it and otherwise ran great, but that rubber in the mount was shot...Good Luck.

Message: I believe 65 mph is around 100km/hr if so thats the same speed I have a vibration. Its from like 98km/hr to 102km/hr no other time. My friends (a Chrysler/Dodge mechanic) told me its the drive shaft. He said its more common on the aluminum drive shafts (inwhich mine has, 2000 4.7L CC Dak)

Message: I have a 1998 4wd SLT with 73K and I just noticed the
same problem. I plan on replacing the u-joints and
having the tires rotated and balanced this weekend and
we'll see if either of those fixes the problem.
Does your vibration go away or at least lessen once
you hit about 75-80 mph? Mine starts at about 60 and
then smooths out at 75-80. I also think it may be the u-
joints since I noticed it more while towing my boat.

Message: ('98 Dodge Durango SLT+ 5.2L)Well, I am sitting in the same boat as all of you. I vibrate at 60mph+ have not noticed it ease off after 80 (kinda scared to go above that with the vibration). I brought it in the shop and they replaced my lower ball joints, said that should fix it, it didn't. I guess i'll try the U-bolts and the drive shaft. If anyone has a answer let me know.

Message: Try a front end alignment, also if you haven't already, try another balance shop. I have found out from hard experience that sometimes these tire jockeys either haven't been trained or are just brain dead and don't have the slightest idea how to REALLY balance a tire. Another problem is, believe it or not, they don't spin the tire fast enough when they balance the tire, this leads to "seeming" good balance, but at high speeds with all 4 tires just SLIGHTLY out of balance, your poor truck starts trying to do an imatation of a belly dancer. Been there, done that. Choose to laugh that off at your own expense.

Message: Drive shaft and/or transmission. Both of mine where messed up and I got both fixed at the same time. The vibration I had at 65+ went away from fixing one or both. I get on up to 95 with no problems now, except mileage that is.

Message: Hey I have an 03 Durango and it has the same propblems but my dealership said it was normal for that vehicle but I think they are full of crap! I had my tires roadforce ballanced 2 or 3 times and it still vibrates.

I have a simple solution for you. You see when it comes to warranty, DC is one of the worst companies in the industry. They will tell you every malfunction you have is normal until your warranty period is over. Take it to the dealership. You and the salesman take a drive in another Durango off of the lot and get it up to some pretty good speeds. Then go back and take urselves for another drive in your Durango. Hit and hold the speed limiter and ask him if he feels safe going this speed with that much vibration. Ask him if you purchased the optional vibration package that the other Durango you just test drove did not have. If he tries to BS his way out, (still hitting speed limiter) tell him to get the FUK out of your office.

Message: Hey I have the same vibration . Its not a driveshaft or u-joint . Mine comes from the front end . 00 clubcab r/t . I am a master tech and cant figure this one out but still working on it! I have road forced my tires ( about the best balance you can do to a tire/wheel )New tires twice , checked everything normal so far . Mine comes and goes at will . Sometimes 60 sometimes 65 , 70 ect. Other times smooth as can be . I am going to do a runout check on my front hubs Monday to check them for being true . Im thinking I may have a bearing problem . Of course there like a fortune to replace do to the sealed hub/Bearing combo ! But what isnt a fortune on this truck .... you would think its forign by the prices they want for parts ! Maybe I will just trade the pile in ! To bad the steering on these trucks sucks so bad its the only real complaint I have about my r/t . This is definatly a scary ride ont he interstate . If it isnt chagning lanes by itself it shakes you so bad you want to throw up . Sounds like by the forums its not just mine !

Message: Tracking down the source of a vibration can be difficult. But you should not be just guessing and replacing parts. That gets expensive and frustrating. First off, try and make the distinction between engine/transmission, and differential/suspension.
Get the truck well into it's vibration zone, preferably above it. Then put it into neutral and let it coast down. If the vibration is essentially unchanged, then it's not engine/transmission.
Find a long steep hill (tough to do if you live in KS). Get moving down the hill and let engine compression slow you down. If the vibration occurs, take a close look at U joints.
If it's not engine transmission, then take a close look at everything that spins. Use a dial indicater and check run out of rotors, wheels, tires, axles, drive shaft, etc. Also use the dial indicater to check for off axis movement; left should be the same as right. Don't forget to check for movement in spring mounts
If you really think it's the tires (usually not), then rotate them front to rear. If the quality of the vibration changes, it's tires/wheels. Don't waste time and money getting them balanced 5 times. It didn't change anything the first time, it won't change anything the 5th time either.
If it is engine/transmission, check the mounts first - the most common failure in my experiance. But don't forget all that stuff hanging on the front of the engine spinning at 3-4K rpm's.
If you spend a few hours using your head and a few simple tools, you can usually find and fix the problem with a minimum of expense. At least, that's been my experiance

Message: ok guys,.... you are driving a dakota with a v8 most likely, act like you are. here is my point... if you wanted it to not vibrate, buy a flippin toyota... personally i like it when my truck vibrates,..because i know i have a powerful truck, and it's like "oooohhh ya baby"... if u can't put up with the vibration, why did you buy a dakota? or any domestic for that matter.
