Subject: Vehicle Speed Sensor IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2004 4.7L V8 4x4 with 5 speed standard
transmission.
The speedometer stopped working and I also have
the ABS light and Parking brake light on. The
code is a P0501. I changed the VSS on the rear
dif already to no avail. I have been looking
for the one that is supposedly on the
transmission but cannot find it. Does anyone
have experience with this that could help me
find where the sensor is..
Thanks!

Message: I had the same problem about 2 months ago on my
2001 Quad Cab 4.7 5 Speed (2WD)
I replaced the VSS, and it did not fix the issue.
I then tested the connection from the ABS connector in the engine compartment.
see brianesser.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/abscomputerlocation.png
This showed an open connection.
Tracked it to a crushed / broken wire at the rear axle that went from the speed sensor to the left side of the truck. It was cut about 4 inches from the wire bundle that runs down the frame. I spliced the wire, soldered and sealed it. Then routed the wire to make sure it didn't get crushed again.
Everything works now.
