this is not my rig. my friend and i where out scouting last night and on a slightly rough road his rpm's keep comming up to about 1500 you can lock the brakes up untill the engine kills and it will not idle down unless you put the clutch in for a second. you get on pavement and put it in first and it will lug down the road for miles with no problems. but off road no way it starts to haul ass im sorry i dont know the year i think its a y2k i know its got the V8 in it and hauls ass but off road its usless with this problem any help????

If he has a manual shift the rpm's will fluctuate. Mine would rev up and down especially when I pushed in the clutch and was coasting off road due to the sensors in the axle, it tells the throttle body to give it gas to speed up the engine to match the wheel movement. Too many sensors working against each other.

I've noticed the same problem while idling along logging roads hunting. If I creep up to a hump or a small washout, give it just enough throttle to ease over it the rpms will not drop back to a normal idle (600 rpm) when I ease off the throttle. Do this a couple of times and pretty soon your "idling" at 1500 RPM. (max idle limit
set by the computer ?)
I think that the computer is confused by the constant feathering of the throttle and is attempting to set a new idle point.
If the throttle body were tying to match wheel speed then anytime you went into a compression braking situation the engine would increase its RPM. I've noticed this happening weather your going up hill or down.
Whatever the reason, it's realy annoying but I 'don't know if anything can be done about it.

I spent alot of time at the Dodge company trying to get an explanation as to why they designed the truck this way. There is no fix to this problem. To many speed sensors. I was told they were in the axles and transmission and were linked to the computor for the fuel injectors/idle speed adjustment which is all controlled by the computor. So if you were coasting in gear and pushed in the clutch to roll the computor would sense that you were not accelerating enough to match the wheel rotation speed and the computor would then try to adjust the engine rev to match the rotation. This is how Dodge tryed to explain it to me. Hope this helps you out. I traded mine in for an automatic because when I was coasting down steep hills with the clutch depressed my truck would go from 600rpm's to 1500rpm's on its own and I didn't like it at all.
