If you've got the 45RFE Multispeed transmission behind your 4.7L you might be interested in this.
Earlier this week I was climbing Highway 88 out of Jackson, California on my way over the Sierra at Carson Pass. It was about 90 degrees out and I had about 1,000 pounds in the bed. After crawling through a construction zone, the Malfunction Indicator Light came on and I lost forward momentum. Engine was fine so I suspected transmission problems.
After letting the transmission cool a bit I was able to limp back down the hill and call a tow truck.
Found a Dodge dealer with a transmission expert on staff. Their initial analysis was a blown seal or pump inside the transmission. They said rule of thumb on these transmissions is if you have two failed internal components, it's best to rebuild or replace the entire transmission.
A rebuilt 45RFE lists for about $2200, plus about eight hours labor to install. Unfortunately, there are no rebuilt units in the pipeline because they haven't had enough failures to create a supply of rebuildable cores. A new 45RFE is about $4,000.
I didn't sleep well that night.
Next day the dealer calls saying they think they've found the problem and it won't require a new transmission. The transmission pan was oil-canned from contact with an object. The pan was pushed flat up against the filter intake, severely restricting the flow. The mechanic bent the pan back to flat, reinstalled it, filled the transmission with fluid then drove the truck hard, trying to repeat the failure of the day before. It performed perfectly.
They changed the filters, flushed and refilled the transmission, and I was out the door for about $400.
So, check your transmission pan for damage.
And if you ever break down along Highway 88, go see the lads at Amador Motors in Sutter Creek.

Wow, while reding this post..when i got to the 4 grand i took a big swallow and felt a lump in my throat, then the sigh of relief.. Thank God there are honest people and Dodge Dealers around.. Thanx for the info.. Good luck to ya, I had my trans serviced at 30,000 the 45RFE and dealer charged me 170.00 TTL, sound like he had to really work out the dent in the pan. for a 400.00 bill.

I AGREE!!! thank God for an honest mechanic.
I'm having troubles with a 45RFE myself right now. It's a 2000 Dakota 4X4. The code is a PO720{output speed sensor}. Got a new sensor today. Guess we'll see.
