Subject: 2002 4.7 Temp IP: Logged
Message: I just installed a new 195 degree thermostat and the engine seems to be running a little warmer than it was with the old thermostat.
I hooked my obdII scanner up, and it says the engine is running at 205 degrees.
Is this normal for a 195 degree thermostat? or should the temp be running at 195?

Message: What kind of T-stat did you use? Not all brands are created equal. You shouldn't have any mechanical problems running at that temp but colder temps ususally give better performance.
Are you getting the 205 after any length of drive or was that after a long drive?

Message: I got the thermostat at Napa.
It gradually warms up to 205, and will hold that temp going down the interstate 70 mph with the ac on high.

Message: Sounds to me like they may have packaged your T-stat wrong. a 195 should open at 195 degrees and them you'll see the temp go down while the coolant in the engine warms up to 195 until it opens again. Once the coolant in the radiator and the engine are at a constant 195 the tstat will stay open which if it's really hot could cause the temp to climp north of 195 but it sounds like your's isn't opening 'till 205 which tells me its a 205 degree t-stat.
Again, shouldn't be a huge issue but for performance most will install a lower temp t-stat-say 180 degrees to lower the combustion temp and atomize fuel better which results in better performance.
