Subject: Front axle question IP: Logged
Message: Front drive axle was not working when placed in 4x4 mode so I opened up the front diff. and found out why. Broken gear parts instead of complete gears. Now because the local bone yards don't have any 94-96 4 wheel drive Dakotas to just switch out drive axles. My question is this. Since the front and rear gear ratios have to match, can I pull the gearset out of a rearend and put it in the front axle? If they aren't the same they are very close to being the same. Or will I need to find an entire front axle that matches the one I have? Junk yard parts are so much cheaper than factory ordered. But what the hell I already have sunk more $$$ in that truck than it would have cost me to just buy new. We've all got habits and I get my kicks from givin my truck its fix. Any one know if theres a rehab or a 12 step program available? Or would a 6 step program be cheaper??? Hmmmm

Message: Howard, I don't beleive the front and rear axles use the same size gears. You better find a front axle or rebuild what you have. Wish I had better news for you but that's about it.
You can try www.car-part.com and search salvage yards across the country. Some takem credit cards, offer warranties and ship to you.

Message: If youe going to pretend to be me then at least pretend to be educated beyong the 3rd grade. Pretend you can spell simple words like axle's. And it's BECAUSE not BECUASE, and DIFFERENT not DIFFERNT. Schools out, so get out of your parents bathroom and the next time someone asks if your "stoned or just stupid" don't blame it on the pot.

Message: Howard, when chastising someone for improper spelling, be sure your spelling is correct.
It's YOU'RE, not youe, and it's BEYOND, not beyong, it's AXLES, not axle's. Axles is plural, axle's is possessive.
It's school's, not schools. Apostrophe s is a contraction of school and is.
It should have been parents' not parents. The former is plural possessive, the latter is only plural.
Finally, the correct word is you're, not your. You're is a contraction of the words, you and are.
Class dismissed.

Message: The front and rear ring and pinions are different size, I think the back is 8 1/4 inch, and the front is smaller, around 7 1/2" ? or maybe 7 1/4.......I have a set of 3.55 ratio ring and pinions (front and back) that I took out of my 93 4x4 Dakota, They are almost like new, I went to a 3.90 ratio for more power, I would sell the set of 3.55 ring and pinions cheap....make me an offer.....

Message: Thanks Tony, but it turns out that my front axle is the 3.90. I have been looking for a complete axle assembly at Pick-n-pull. They have alot of 2 wheel drive Dakotas. Which doesn't help with this problem. I think it will be much easier to just drop that front axle out and swap the entire thing instead of trying to replace the gearset. A Dakota 4x4 front axle is only $169.00 at pick n pull and now that they are putting their inventory online you don't have to pay the entry fee to find out if they have what you need. Its about time they made things easier on us. But thanks for the offer anyway.

Message: Your ring and pinions are 3.90 ? Well you are lucky, I think that was an option that had to be ordered only, I had mine installed in Mt.Home,Ark., in 1997 for $1100.00, thats parts labor ,front and back, less than half of the lowest estimate in KC, good luck finding any Dakota parts at pick n pull, they are hard to find....I am in the middle of pulling a 318 out of a 95 Dakota and putting it in my 93 4x4 Dakota...

No, it's because you forgot to use spellcheck.com idiot! Again, if you going to teach someone to spell *differnt* then at least be smart enough where you don't have to use a spellchecker
