 Subject: Weird electrical problem

I started up my 2001 Dakota yesterday. Start was normal. All dash
lights worked and headlights and taillights were on. Turn signals,
radio and cigarette lighter were all out. I drove about 10 miles and
the problems remained the same. Then I got home and checked
the three fuses (cig lighter, turn signals, radio). All were OK. I
restarted the car and everything was fine. I turned the ignition on
and off five times, and all was fine. Today I have driven it and all is
still fine.
Anyone have ideas of what happened??????

I have a similar problem with my 91 Dakota, but I know what my problem is caused by - a weak/loose ignition switch. Hell, I can turn the truck on and pull the key out, and drive, and turn the truck off. Just can't seem to turn it on without the key, bugger. But I guess that's a good thing. Can turn to RUN but not START.
Anyway, its possible that you just had your key turned a little too far forward. Far enough to disengage some things that are off during the START circuit, but close enough to not engage the starter.

Chris -- I think you hit the nail on the head!!!! I know that my
ignition switch has a lot of "play" in it. If the truck is running and I
back off on the switch about a 1/32 of an inch, it will shut off the
engine, but not the dash lights.
If this ever happens again, I'll just giggle the key. THANKS for
posting.
