Subject: First Dakota, have a couple questions IP: Logged
Message: So I recently purchased my first Dodge which is a 99 Dakota 4x4 with the 5.2 in it. So far I love this truck but there are a few things that worry me.
The first question I have is when starting the truck when the motor is cold. There seems to be a chirp noise that will last for a good 15 minutes until the motor is warmed up. It does not increase with RPM just a constant chirp chirp chrip. Bad belt or tensioner possibly?
The second quesion I have has to do with the tranny. I have heard some horror stories about Dakota trannys and I hope this isnt one of them. When putting the truck from park into reverse or drive into reverse, it makes a clunk noise that shakes the truck, but if i put the truck in neutral first than to reverse, it does not do it. Any answers to these questions will be greatly appreciated! BTW the truck has 160,000 miles on it :P

Message: Might be able to isolate the chirp by listening to suspected areas through a pipe if you don't have a stethoscope.
For the clunk, I'd start by checking the u-joints in the drive shaft.

Message: Yes the chirp is probley the belt 5.2 notorious for this, the clunk could be the u-joints but also check tranny and motor mounts also check for excessive play in the rear end, i.e. the pinion bearing could be going out. just try to move the drive shaft up, down, side to side, if their seems to be more than you think have a mechnic check to make sure. might be a pinion bearing giving out, another sign of this is a whining noise comeing from the rear end when you let off the gas and coast. hope this helps

Message: Soundes like U- joints in the driveshaft for that clunk.
The chirp is either the belt or the belt tensioner either way not that hard to fix.
