Subject: Coolant overflow problem. IP: Logged
Message:
I have a 02 Dakota Quad cab with a 4.7 V8. Normally the coolant heats up and is vented to the overflow, when it cools it is sucked back into the engine. Problem is it doesn't do that anymore. Keeps blowing coolant out of the engine and into the overflow till it is full and the engine starts to over heat. I have to manually pump the coolant back into the engine. The coolant system is still presurized after the engine is completely cool and this morning it sucked air in when I pumped the coolant back to the engine.
I first thought it was the rad cap. Replaced with a after market one 3 weeks ago and again on Friday with a dodge one. No change and it spent 2 days at dodge dealer who couldn't find a problem. Of course they were focused on overheating, not the overflow or lack of coolant draw back which is the cause of the overheating.
On the weekend I drove 1.5 hour on the highway and started to run hot when I slowed down in town. Stopped for lunch and then checked and pumped the coolant back. Drove back and did it again this morning when it was nice and cold.
Any ideas??

Message: The overflow and lack of coolant draw back might be a symptom of overheating; rather than the cause - if the radiator cap is good. How's the belt tension ? Thermostat operatinng properly ?

Message: The fan seems to come on when it is supposed to, at least it is
running when it starts to get warm.
The Belt seems tight and both the upper and lower rad hoses are
warm after running this morning so I think the thermostat is ok.
I did hear a boiling / gurgle noise this morning as the coolant was
going into the the overflow. I will double check the belt tonight and
perhaps replace the thermostat on the weekend.

Message: The Aux. fan should come on for 2 reasons:
1) Engine temp @ 210 degF.
2) Engine tmep above 130 degF and demand for A/C.
Any hose collapsing?

This seems sporadic it didn't do it for 2 days then last night it did.
Also noticed the upper hose seems slightly warmer then the lower
last night.

Message: That sounds like a sticking T-stat. On a 4.7, isn't the T-stat in the lower radiator hose? That would explain the upper hose being warmer than the bottom.

Going to try to change it on the weekend and give it a flush.
Thanks

Message: Hi guys
I changed the thermostat, found the upper rad hose had a small
leak and was dripping on the belt when it was hot (new at the
end of last week). Replaced both the rad hose and the belt after
washing everything down.
Still have the draw back issue. Going to watch it for a few days,
see what happens.
Forgot to mention, have the towing package so there is a tran
cooler too. Any other suggestions?

Message: Check the overflow hose. If there is a pinhole or small crack it might pull air instead of coolant.

Message: Cracked head gasket? Exhaust is pressurizing the cooling system blowing the water out the overflow and replacing it with air ? I say this because in his first post he says "The coolant system is still pressurized after the engine is completely cool"

Message: I don't know about the head gasket. Wouldn't it be blowing some white smoke/steam out of the exhaust?
Have you pulled anyn of the plugs to look at them? The plugs would look like new if it is.

Message: I had checked the overflow hose and if anything was blocking it but
I changed it tonight to see if it would be the cause.
If it was the head gasket shouldn't there be some coolant in the oil
or steam. Haven't pulled a plug but I also had a tune up 2-3
months ago so they are new plugs.
Tonight I took it for a good run, no overheat and no boiling gurgle
noise when it was shut off. Now to see if it draws back.

Message: Hi Guys
If I run short distance, say 20-30 min then the coolant in the
resevoir goes up about an inch, leave it to cool overnight and it
is drawn back into the system with no pressure in the system.
If I run on the highway for a couple hours it fills the overflow
and I'm sure it would spill out if I kept going. Leave it to cool
overnight and it draws back some of the coolant but not all.
System has slight pressure left, opening a coke sounds louder.
Could it be a blocked rad?? Back pressure from the water pump
being blown out the rad cap then only drawing back the normal
heat pressure?

Message: Have you replace the Rad cap yet ? If you do .. make sure you get the one with the right pressure rating ..... go to the dealer for it .... autozone/discount stuff is crap

Message: You have a blown head gasket. You may not find water in the oil or smoke out of the exhaust because the cylinder pressure is greater than the cooling sytem pressure and therefore coolant is never really getting into the cylinder so you have no smoke or coolant in the oil. A simple block check, a test that we perform to look for the presence of co2 in the cooling system, will verify this. Co2 is a product of combustion and if the head gasket is blown and leaking into the cooling system you will have co2 in it.

Message: I am unsure if it is the head gasket since when it was at the dealer
it wouldn't overheat or fill the overflow over two days. They said
they did a pressure test and couldn't find any problems. Ok, so they
may be just telling me that to or it has developed since.
Yesterday I found I have coolant spray on the hood from the belt
again and this time I spotted a small drip coming from the water
pump shaft... its going to the shop on Tuesday. Update you all
later.
