Subject: 97 dakota IP: Logged
Message: ok i am getting some noise comming from the rear end and i think it is going out. the tag in the glove box sayd the gear ratio is 3.5 but dodge didnt have a 3.50 gear ratio come out in a 97 dakota. the rear end i put in it to replace the other one was 3.55 and only had 9 in brakes on it but the rear end i pulled had 10 in brakes and was also a 3.55. any ideas?

Message: from what i can find 9" and 10" were both available that year. you maybe lost a little braking power going to 9" drums but i doubt you'll notice it unless you tow heavy loads all the time.
so what's the problem?

Message: like it feels like the gears are gettin a lot of pressure on them. but its only on the driver side and i changed the fluid and checked it out and it looks really good. i did notice that the axle on that side may be bent a little bit. could that be why?

most definitely. i hope you got some kind of warranty wherever you bought it from.

Message: i did. i was just hoping i wouldnt have to go through all the trouble again. how hard is it to jsut change the axle and seals? i know they are not very expensive. it took me about three months to find this rear end.
