Message: Yes, lots of different reasons to have this, including a recall/TSB issue on certain year models.
Maybe you could enlighten us on things like:
year, body style, mods to the wheels, etc.

Message: If it's a contiuous clicking as you turn the wheel could be a clockspring. IF it's just an occasional 1 or two clicks or knocks, could be a bad column.
There's also a very good possibility you have a worn steering universal joint. Id start off by check cause it's easy. Have a friend turn the wheel with the engine off and the truck parked, look at the joint, and listen for it to make a sound. Sometimes the sound is coming from that joint underneath the truck but it can fool you into thinking its coming from the immediate area of the steering wheel.

Message: It's more than likely the the lower steering shaft. I had mine replaced while still under warranty. I haven't heard the knock since.

Message: Could be the intermediary shaft joint...mine starting popping 7 years ago and I never fixed it. I was told it won't fail on me just an annoyance...
