Subject: Towing a Dakota IP: Logged
Message: '99 Dakota Club Cab 4X4 XLT, 5.2 Auto
I am looking to tow my Dakota behind my RV, the owner's manual says no for the auto because the front and rear axles will spin the t-case and auto.
Curious if anybody else uses an automatic Dak as their 'towed' and if so how?
I could conceivably just disconnect the driveshafts at the front and rear pumpkins and suspend them, then flat tow the pickup behind my RV.
Thoughts or suggestions?

Message: My manual says that to. Though disconnecting the drive shaft is not very convenient. I would put it on a trailer. You could probably find a cheap used one in the newspaper.

Message: While I don't have my manual in front of me, I thought you could put the tranny in Neutral and then shift the T-Case into Neutral as well and it should leave everything free spinning?

Personally I wouldn't,
If one worked free your going to see a hell of a catapult!
If your going to do it, Just remove them.

Message: The only problem with just removing them is the tranny fluid will leak all over the place when the truck starts or stops or goes up or down a hill. Yea... not good.

Message: Found some guys on my RV forum that are towing Dak's and Durango's and Jeep's.
Tranny in N and T-Case in N - they have no trouble so once I get the beast put back together that is what I will try.

The reason you don't want to flat tow an automatic is because you'll spin the transmission. Without the pump running, the oil will boil, and burn up the transmission. This I understand.
A transfer case is either gear driven, or chain driven. It doesn't have or need a pump to get properly lubricated - like a manual transmission or differential.
So, Why not leave the transfer case in Neutral, and the transmission in Park?
In the middle of typing this, I went out to see what would happen if I did this. Would it roll down the hill? I still don't know, because my (NV233?) transfer case won't shift to Neutral. The red light just flashes.
I read the owners manual. Didn't give good instructions on how to do this. But, I did find a statement that said the Neutral position was for flat towing behind another vehicle. It said, "See recreational towing section...". My owners manual doesn't have that section. The service manual was no help, either

Message: I towed my 95 4X4 dakota close to 4000 miles one way when i moved cross country with no problems by puting the auto in park and the t-case in neutral.
Leaving the auto in neutral would have let the transmission spin unlubricated which prob would have damaged somthing but i figured that the t-case was getting lubed as the shafts were turning the gears
The only tranny problems i had was the stinking UHAUL truck tranny failed 1/2 way ther and i had to switch every thing over to a different truck, Blah
