A few questions about superchips.
My pickup is a 2001 CC Dakota,4.7,auto,4X4,81000 miles,3.55 gearing
I tow a camper aprox 4500 lbs,the truck handels it pretty well but I would like the shifting to be a little stiffer,and a few more HP definatly wouldnt hurt,do you guys think the superchips would be for me?
I have thought about lowering my gearing,but realy dont tow it often enough to do that,and I would still have the soft shifting to deal with.
I dont plan on doing any other mods in the near future,possibly exhaust someday but not untill the stock one starts getting thin.
I have also thought about the HO cams but dont know if they help lowend??or are mostly upperend??
If i decide to try a superchips or possibly HO cams where are the best deals??

I have a 2000 Dakota and turned it over to Superchips so they could use it to help get the 4.7L programming on the Superchips fine tuned. I got one for free out of it.
It has a towing setting that you might like, I could lay into mine with the bed full of about 200lbs of catering stuff and still $h!t & get with no problems. I also have HO cams installed by Marty over at KRC Performance here in Central Florida. Added both of these after 112k and the combo surely woke up my old truck and put some life back into it. I am able to run the performance program (requires 91 octane minimum) and use 89 octane gas with very-very little knocking.
In my opinion and with my experience in both the tuner and the HO cams, its not a bad investment for an older truck.

Im with izzy. Though we went with a complete H.O. engine and did a little tweaking and grinding to it. It was a worth while swap. The superchips is excellent though with the H.O. I can only use the performance tow program on 92 and the performance on a blend of 92/100 with NO knock. We run the base program when we run it on the bottle. The superchips firms up the shift verry well. Our dak lays a good scratch on the 1-2 and has a verry agressive 2-3 at wot. On the bottle it will get sideways on the 1-2 and a good hard bark on the 2-3 @ around 70mph. pretty cool. For a 4 door 4x4 that looks as plane and stock as it did the day we bought it.
As for towing, it does verry well when used for what it is intended for. As good as any 1/2 ton truck of equal weight though it does suffer from lack of wheel base.

One other thing. Our truck has 3.92 gears, for us they work best. We run a 31" snow/mud tire in the winter and the stock wheel tire combo in the summer. Cool thing about the superchips is I can adjust the speedo to the tire changes. I will say it tows heavier loads much better on the 27" tire. Runs .2 quicker in the 1/4 also, some of that is due to the weight differance in the rotating mass I would guess.

More than just that; running shorter tires is like running lower gears since they don't cover as much ground on each revolution.

If you are looking into tuning, SCT Flash has it covered hands down. I can set you up with anything you need and its all custom. Timing is much more agressive than with Superchips, and if you have any knock issues or want something changed, a simple phone call and me sending you an e-mail can fix it. I am currently playing around with shift parameters on a customers 4x4 4.7, trying to get it dialed in just right. As far as cams go, the HO's are ok, but if you want something that yes, is more expensive, but something worth your time to install, go with something from the aftermarket such as the 212X cams. I have a used set of those on my shelf downstairs. Check out my website.
