Subject: are headers for my 318 worth it? IP: Logged
Message:
Hey, i've been lookin at buyin a pair of headers for my truck, its a 99 extended cab, 4x4 sport with a 318 (5.2). I've talked to some people around town, and they have all told me not to waste my money on buyin headers for my truck, because the holes in my manifolds are bigger than the holes in the headers, is there any truth to this?

Message: That may be the case with cheap sets of headers, but the quality sets like Mopar Performance (aka PPH), Gibson, JBA, etc. should help you out.
Avoid those cheap sets from oddball brands, they're usually smaller diameter, thinner metal, poorer finish, etc.

Message: I feel they were worth it on my '99 4x4... I ran with PPH headers (which I sell, hint hint)... I towed a '72 Dart on a trailer from San Jose -> San Diego after the header install, and the perf. on the Grapevine (fwy, not the song) was great... Pulled 45-50 mph in 2nd no problem... Averaged 13.5 mpg towing at 65-70 mph. Around town it was in the 11-12mpg range, got 18 on the highway empty running 75-80 mph on cruise.
If you are running skid plates they might not fit.

I put Magna-Flow Cat-Back on it and got 30 horse and torque from that alone. The only other mod is that i took the blocker plate of the air intake in the grill.

Message: keep in mind a 92-93 won't see as much gain from headers as later models will. The 92-93 had larger diameter exhaust from the factory. Don't just give your old manifolds away Jason as they would add power to any stock 94-02, 5.2 or 5.9. It took Doug Thorley 3 years before he could figure out a header setup with worthy gains to a 92-93 5.2. Now quite a few companies have something for them, but they still don't help as much as they do a 94 or newer.

Message: I have a set of Edelbrock shorty nickel plated headers for my 97 318(K&N FIPK, single in dual out exhaust, cut cat). Put them on myself(not to difficult to install) They made a difference in the midrange 2500-3300RPM range...Pulls a lot more. They look pretty cool too. I paid 319$ for them from JEGS PERFORMANCE...I'm getting ready to put true duals on to get rid of the y-pipe...definitly ristricting the airflow from the headers and intake system.

Message: I don't know if your pre magnum 5.2 (91) will accept magnum headers as a bolt on. They did used to make headers for your truck directly from Mopar Performance but I don't think they were smog legal. I bet magnum manifolds or headers would work just fine, and either one would give your 91 a bit of a boost. Just about every thing on the 91's could stand improvement, didn't the 5.2 pick up 50Hp from 91 to 92?

Message: Hooker Headers makes a set of Headers for the 91 318 but they wont work with the air pump so you have to take it off for them to work. They are the Super Competition headers they make ceramic coated ones as well the non ceramic are $318 from summit and the ceramic was i think 380-415 but i cant remember i would guse that you would get a gain around 20-30hp good luck you also need to plug the smog ports in the heads call Hooker for this

Message: bonestock,
The tir-y headers from doug thorley and the mopar headers come with a new y-pipe. The shorties that bolt to the stock y-pipe will still give you a gain because of the design but mostly in the top-end. For steet use go with the tri-y's and get the bonus of extra torque.

Message: My last Dakota was a 94. I bought a set of the Summit shorty headers for late model trucks. Which is a Flowtech. To me, they lok just like a set of JBA's. I have never seen anthing other than pictures of some of the other headers out there other than a set of Mopar Performance headers for a 99 RT. From what they looked like
to me they aren't any better than the Summit headers. For the money, they are a good header. The flange is 3/8 inch think and the headers are made from 16 guage steel. They are well made and I never had any problems with them. Other than that they did hit the upper a-frame on the passenger side and put a small dent in one of the tubes. I paid $169 plus shipping. The headers made a noticeable difference in the power and performance of my truck. I would say that I picked up 20 horsepower at least. Gains were noticeable up to 4000. I sand blasted the paint off of them and sprayed them with some chrome high temp paint for engines (rated up to 1200 degrees) I got from Advance Auto Parts. Turned out very well. I don't see the need for more expensive headers. That is my opinion. What do the rest of you think about this?
P.S. The RT had 3 inch exhaust, high flow converter, flowmaster mufflers, 2 1/2 inch tailpipes beside the Mopar headers and the difference it made was very little. Some RT's seem not to respond to mods that well. Am I wrong? The truck ran maybe 3-4 tenths quicker. I picked up that I figure from the headers alone. I think that dual exhaust cat-backs hurt performance instead of help. Comments?

Message: I have a 91 dakota and I am looking for headers that will fit in it. I talked to KRC performance and they said that the ones from a 92 to a 96 would work, but the bottem section might not lign up with the stock exhaust. ( Doug Thorely headers). Does anyone know if this is true? Heres another kicker, I want to put in the Mopar 360 crate engine that makes 380 horse, will the headers match up to that? Any advice would be appreciated.

Dodge wanted more of a "truck motor" in '94, according to the press reports at the time. Mopar Action had a '93 that ran 14.9 1/4mi stock, 14.4 with a K&N drop-in and MP 25 horse computer. It was a 5.2 RC auto 3:92 on 215/75/15 tires.
