Subject: '03 4.7 dakota pulsates when slowing

2003 Dakota with the 4.7L engine and 50K miles seems to pulsate (lurch forward over and over until at a complete stop) when applying brake pressure at low speeds. This truck has an automatic transmission. It only does it when traveling at low speeds, such as approaching a stop light and is not felt at higher braking speeds. Since it is at such low speed and not felt at other times, I have ruled out brake rotors being warped or any such idea. The dealer it was purchased from said this is a "normal" trait to dakota's/durangos. Could it be something with the transmission or torque converter?

Any help is appreciated, this problem is driving me nuts!

i love it when dealers try to explain troubles away by calling it "normal". it's not normal, you need to check the runout on the rotors first. they may need to be trued up. the rotors may not be warped. they may just have a little build up on them. mine did that after i changed pads recently. now, after a few thousand miles they don't do it anymore.

Could be torque converter turbine or impeller has a wee bit of runout. This runout could cause pulsations that would be more pronounced when the trans and fluid is not yet up to operating temp, and at very low speed.

Man I had that same issue with my '01 4.7. It has 102K now and its been doing it for the last 40K. I took it to multiple trans shops and dealers to determine what was causing the "bad shifting" and lunging at lights. My idle started getting very sporadic and the check engine light finally came on. I ran the codes and found I needed an idle sensor. I picked it up from the dealer for $85, popped it in and just like that the issues I had for 2 + years are now gone!!! I might suggest you replace this as nobody could determine the issue and I am so glad I figured it out!!! I have the part number someplace if you need it and good luck!

Idle sensor ? There's an idle air control (IAC) and a throttle position sensor (TPS); both on the throttle body. Know which one it was ?

My dakota did that before i bought it so i made the dealership turn the rotors before i bought it and it hasnt done it since.

More than likely its the rear drums out of round. Rotors are usually felt in the steering as a lite shimmy side to side. Drums cause a surge as they catch the high spot and release to the low spot. Check your rear drums first...

There should be no drums on an 03 Dak. IF my 04 is the same, there's discs all around.

There could easily be low speed brake wobble with poorly torqued rotors. Always torque each nut to specs. Unevenly toqued rotors will wobble and will warp when hot.

I assume Drew was talking about the TPS.
If that is worn, your transmission wont shift right, and you could get some irratic engine operation.
A dirty IAC could make it overshoot as it tries to adjust and cause a simular pulsation. But it would usually keep pulsating once at a complete stop where warped rotors/drums would stop causing the pulsation when you stop.

All of the above could cause pulsations at one time or another.

I bet if you held the brake and put it in gear you could figure something out. If it surges while in gear and not moving, then it's not the brakes. Turn on the A/C while sitting stopped in gear. It should increase the RPM slightly. If the RPM's jump up and down then probably a dirty IAC having trouble moving and then overshooting as it attempts to adjust. A bad TPS would be irratic as you change throttle positions.
