OK, first of all sorry for such a long post, but this is very important. Heres my problem, i have a 97 std cab dak with a 5.2 and auto tranny. Last week on the way back from work i heard a slight noise, about like an unbalanced tire, shortly afterwards a loud bang and the rear end of my truck slid around, my rear end locked up completly destroying the bearings and gears inside and also breaking my drive shaft, im getting rid of it for a newer model, so i was wondering what i can do for a rear end that will be realativly cheap. What vehicles can i get a rear end out of to fix my problem? My friend has GEN1 Dak and we were wondering if his rear end(with my axle half shafts to keep the six lug bolt patern) would work. Oh and while im on here, does anybody know of a cheep place to get a new rear window for cheap(i have a short temper:(

I haven't measured, but I seem to remember looking at an axle shaft chart for ordering replacements many years ago (was considering changing to a 6-lug pattern for the newer Dakota stuff) and seems like the shafts were the same length because I remember thinking, "Okay, that's an easy swap if I decide to do it." Since it's already down, I'd say pull the shafts and measure. There were some changes to the 8.25 rear around '97-'98 (somewhere in there), so check the spline count on the shafts. Just pull one of each and eyeball them. Any differences that might be an issue will be easy to see. Just remember, the bearings are pressed onto the shafts, and yours is the one that locked up, so you really should plan on having new bearings pressed on.

I've never measured, but I've heard the gen 1 has a narrower rear than your '97. With a v8, you might have the 9.25 rear, instead of the 8.25. The carrier bearings are known to be problematical either way - it might be bearing failure that locked your rear; rather than the rear locking causing the bearings to fail.

I have the 8.25 rear end, which doesn't make sense being that it is a V8.

I thought that they only put the 9.25s in the R/Ts and the '00+ V8 Dakotas. I could be wrong though.

Finally... a V8. '01 Dodge Dakota RC, 4.7, 5-speed, 3.92 LSD. = R/T Killer.
well at least a stock one

Doesn't make sense? The 8.25 has been in use behind V8's since the late 60's. That includes big 70's cars (3800+ lbs), as well as 318-powered vans and 2WD Ramchargers (over 4,500lbs plus towing capacity). The 8.25 has enough stones to handle a 300hp street-driven V8 (and that's before the beefing up in the late 90's).

Im pushin more than 300hp, but i've done alot to it recently, I just need to fix it so i can get rid of it to get something with a little better fuel economy, maybe a 3.9 or new 4.7, but the rear end went out with the cruise set at about 55mph, so there wasn't much stress at all. then again that rear end also has 188,746 miles on it.I wonder if graphitedak might know about the rear end possabilities?

For a direct replacement, you want the rear from a Dakota of the same generation.
