Subject: what do you think? IP: Logged
Message: What are a list of mods for a 5.2L that is a daily driver/power house and does a lot of towing?
So far I have:
Intake Manifold
50mm TB
1.6 Roller Rockers
Cam
Headers
4.10 Gears
Dual exhaust(2.5" if it pushes 300hp)
Electric Fan
Is there anything else I need to know about?

Message: If you are planning on this being a workhorse for towing, the first thing I'd do is get rid of the electric fan. They can be unreliable and if it goes out its tough to tell right away and there goes your engine. What do you have as far as intake manifold. The M1 is designed for high RPMs and doesn't produce a lot of low end torque, which is what you want for towing. The keg manifold isn't bad and if you have it machined you can get good performance from it without giving much bottom end. Cam is a very important choice and needs to be matched to the intake manifold and heads. I'd suggest one of the hughes engines cams designed for towing. Everything else looks pretty good, just remember its the entire combination that needs to work well together to get the performance you want. Before you start buying anything make sure you have a good idea of what you want and you buy all the parts to work together. If you've got more info on what exactly you're looking for it to do and a budget you'd like to stick to I'm sure everyone can give great suggestions on the best way to get it out of your truck.

at what RPM ?
that sounds like a pretty big cam for towing,
especially in a 318, probably a real screamer in the 2500-6000 range with little usable torque down low, idle to 4500.
Less cam/porting and more cubic inches (360..)
would make more sense for any towing application.

Message: The duration on the cam isn't absurd for a towing application. The lift is pretty substantial, but I don't think its overboard. Of course, it all depends on how it works with the intake and heads. What intake were you planning on running?
This motor appears like it'll get the job done for you. But the fact that you do a lot of towing makes me think that you'll be unsatisfied. A 360 would probably be a much better choice for you. It has more torque to start off with, and more to build from. If you want a towing machine, thats where to start.

Message: I contacted the company and they said it has 1500 to 5000 rpm power range. I wish the power band was a little lower but how does that sound for towing? Its a little high isnt it?

Message: actually that sounds about right where you want it. you'll never be below 1500 rpm unless you're idling. depending on what your truck is the TC stall speed is probably about 1200-1500rpm. that would be where you want to start making power.
