Message: So with the tranny in drive, it starts out in first gear and shifts directly to third?

Message: Take it to the dealership. Dodge has a 10year/100k mile warranty on the powertrain. It will only cost you $100 deductible and they will repair/replace it. I've had mine in there 2 times before 80k miles, usually takes them 3 weeks to fix it.
By the way, they don't care how you broke it; I left all my mods on (they didn't even notice I replaced the engine). So don't be scared to take it in; as long as it's the transmission that's broken, they fix it.

Message: I'm thinking it's the front band. Either it's shot, or badly out of adjustment. Before taking it in, try adjusting the band, see if it helps. This can be done without dropping the tranny pan.

Message: Don't think. Read.
The front band is used only for second gear.
The rear band is used for reverse, and first (when manually selected for "1", but not when in "D" and in first gear. Not quite as straightforward as one might think.
Adjusting the bands is really quite easy, if a bit tedious. The front band adjuster is on the driver side, sticking through the tranny body. It has a locknut on it. You loosen the locknut, turn the adjuster clockwise til it bottoms, then back it out (for your model) about 2 1/4 turns. Hold the adjuster steady so it won't turn, as you tighten the locknut. Front band done.
For the rear band, you repeat the process on that adjuster, backing it off 2 turns, then locking it down. You have to remove the tranny pan for this one. It's towards the rear, and angled down pointing at the passenger side.
You will either see an immediate improvement or not. If the bands are glazed from slippage. If you hear a metallic scraping noise, stop. You'll need to replace them, possibly the drums too if they've been damaged by excessive heat or worn out bands scraping like bad brakes. One thing, your times will improve considerably once fixed.

Message: Weeeeell, once the linkage is ruled out (not bent or out of adjustment), I'd say you may have some debris that's gotten into the area where the park rod slides, and is jamming it up, or has galled the surface so it's binding up instead of sliding. Possibly a broken locking pawl.
