Subject: Heated Mirrors Don't Heat!
IP: Logged

Message:
My heated mirrors no longer heat up (2002 Club cab). The light on push button on the heater control lights up and cycles off as per normal, just getting no heat at the mirrors (both of them). How does this system work? Is there a wiring problem to follow to see what's wrong?

Maybe...

Might be fuse popped.
The light is being turned on by the Central Timer module (CTM), and it doesn't know if the mirrors are even there. So even if you removed the mirrors, the light would still come on and go out after the normal time.

Well, everything else works. Are the heated mirrors on their own fuse? I'll check the panel to see which circuit they're on.
Any other possibilities?

My 2004 FSM shows the mirror heating elements have their own 10amp fuse. It's Fuse 15 in the Junction Block (left end of dash panel).
Give it a look.

Checked the fuse today and it's fine.
Would it be possible for both heater elements to go on both mirrors at the same time? Or is there one element controlling both mirrors?
Anyone know of the wiring of these things to see if it's an electrical problem?

My mistake, Blak Dak. The 15amp fuse is for the control circuitry.
There's a 40amp fuse in the relay/fuse box in the engine compartment for the heating elements.
Look for one called REAR DEFOG.

I didn't see any fuse in the power box under the hood labled Rear Defog or heated mirror. What model year is yours? Did they change it over different years? Mine is 2002. I found it strange that there was a fuse in the 4x4 slot when mine is 2wd!

I hate when this happens. Silly me. I've been believing the FSM instead of my Truck.
In the 2004 FSM, in every drawing that shows it, the fuse is labelled REAR DEFOG.
In my 2004's engine compartment fuse/relay box, though, that fuse is called EBL. Haven't been able to track down exactly what EBL means. There is also a relay labelled EBL as well.
Now I'm curious, so it looks like I got some homework.

K...checked the EBL fuse and it's good. As for the relay, can you tell if it's bad? Is there anything else on this EBL circuit? Everything else works on the truck.
Let me know what you find out.
Thanks!!!

Looks like I have to throw in the towel on this one.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing in my FSM positively identifies EBL fuse or relay. I'll take a long shot guess that based on wire color coding,it might be power for the electronic trailer brake interface connector under the dash, so that was probably a wrong turn.
40amps seems kinda high for a couple mirror heaters, anyway.
As far as both mirror heaters going out at the same time, RaZoR1 didn't exactly say both his went out at the same time, but I guess it's possible.

I just pulled the fuse in my dash panel (fuse 15), and the light next to the mirror heater ON/OFF button wouldn't even light up, so if your light works, the problem would be between the control circuitry in the A/C Heater Control unit, and the ground terminal.
The ground for the mirror heaters is G307, which (if the FSM is to be believed) is tucked away in the area of the driver's seat belt tensioner, no doubt covered up by a bunch of interior trim.
Good luck.

Thanks for the info. Manny. I appreciate you going to the trouble for me. Maybe one lazy Sunday afternoon in the summer I'll see if I can get them working again. I don't forsee having to use them anymore this year. I actually didn't even need to use them this winter at all, but tried them the other week just for giggles to make sure they still work, and low and behold they didn't! But I don't think I'll be replacing them or paying to have it diagnosed if I can't figure it out on my own.
Thanks again!

Actuallly it was only the driver's side that crapped out on me three times, and had it replaced 3 times. As of now they BOTH don't work. It's probably a problem right in the element. Take the mirror off and do a continuity test. (I"m sure that's not spelled rightLOL)

EBL: Electronic Back Light or rear window defroster. Chances are that both mirrors crapped out. you can check the wiring by removing the door panel and unplugging the mirror connector and on the truck side you should have a ground on the black wire(pin 8) and with the heated mirrors turned on there should be power on the tan/black wire(pin 4). hopefully this helps.
