Subject: Oil pressure gauge wierd IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys... my 97' 5.2l DAK seems to have a new problem... my oil pressure gauge keeps like turning off and my check gauge light comes on and then it will go off and the gauge will work just randomly while i drive. i was talking to a friend and he mentioned he had a similar problem and had to replace a belly pan gasket... he said its located under the intake manifold i believe... have any of you had this problem or replaced this gasket?
any info greatly appreciated!

Message: I hope your not driving it like this. First you will need a mechanical guage. Remove the one in the engine and screw in the mechanical one. If this solves the problem, you need a new sending unit. If it does not solve it, and the mechanical unit does the same thing, shut it off fast. You either have an oil pump problem or more likely sludge built up on the pickup screen. If it is sludge you can bet it's going to be all through the engine. It's a messy job but it has to be cleaned out. At best, you can clean the screen and oil pan and also remove the valve covers and clean out all sludge. Put it back together and flush it with autoRx. You need to buy this of the net far as I ever seen. If you been driving it sludged up like this even for a short while chances are you have caused serious engine damage.

Message: Before you go the cost of all that, I would pull the display cluster out. It's not hard and what I would hope to solve by doing that is the whole cluster plugs in the back. Just a thought, but you might hae some connections that have corroded enough to make it intermittent. Good luck...

Message: I miss read the initial posting. I thought he said Check Engine light instead of Check Gauge light. I'm now getting the impression that it's an after market gauge instead of the one in the instrument panel. The thought was there was an intermittent loss of ground that would cause the problem...

Message: Mine has done the same thing before. For me, it was simply due to
the fact that the oil was getting low, or was low in the first place
due to wal mart or sears or soemthing like that. I have changed my
oil myself ever since, and It has never done it since then.
Sometimes places ignore the "4.5 quarts WITHOUT filter" detail,
therefore not having anough oil in there in the first place. I have
always put 5 quarts in mine and it has never had the guage
problem again. So just check your oil level before you go get
something expensive done, just in case.

Message: Could be a oil pump going out. You can try a gauge first but if it doesn't work turn that dude off fast and check that pump. They don't like forever and not always the life of that engine. Dodges are built great but every engine has there on flaws. How many miles on that truck? if over 100 grand it may be that pump. I don't think it would be to much and if you love that dakota you'll buy it. I had a 2001 4.7 and my pump went out. Best of luck man. Sometimes that engine knock will be heard a little to late.

Message: My oil pressure was low and my idle fluctuated when my belly-pan was leaking. Might not hurt to peer down the throttle body.
