Subject: Durango r/t requires premuim fuel? IP: Logged
Message: Hi, I own a 2000 dakota r/t and I was at the mopar drags/car show last weekend and was talking to a guy with a durango r/t and somehow the subject of fuel came up.He claims his owners manual states he has to use premium fuel.My dakota r/t does not have to, doesnt the durango r/t and dakota r/t have the same engine/computer?
He thinks that the timing is more advanced on the durango, giving it the 5 more horsepower then the engine in the ram.Well Mine is rated the same 250hp but I do not have to use premium fuel.
anyone know why he has to use premium as I am curious...

Message: The 2000 Durango R/T used a different PCM than the 5.9L equipped SLTs and Dakota R/Ts. This PCM needed premium. I have some document somewhere showing the Durango R/T made a little more power than the SLT. That would account for the premium gas needed to support the more agressive timing in its PCM.
If it doesn't ping or show signs of detonation on your spark plugs I guess you lucked out and are OK...

Message: I'm gonna stick my neck out and say the Durango RT uses the 5.7 Hemi I thought.
Dakota RT burns 4.7 HO.
It would suprise me if they are'nt both prem gas engines
OK just reread the post a time 'r two and guess were talking 2000 here. = 360's duh! which yes the Durango got a little hotter brain.

Message: In 2000, they were both 5.9s (360s). The 5.7 Hemis were not available for the Durango until 2005 or 2006. Anyway that is the newer body style.
