Subject: Heater core replacement IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 DAK,5.2 V-8, original owner 140k. I have had very little problem with it. I am in the process of replacing the heater core, not a fun one. I have shop manuals and have removed the dash and disconnected the hoses and bolts identified in the engine compartment to remove the heater/AC housing. I cannot get the AC condesor loose from the firewall. Not a lot of room to work there. Is there a special tool required for this? Any suggestions or help are greatly appreciated.

Message: There's a rumor that when vehicles are built, the heater core is the first piece, and the rest of the vehicle is built around it.

Message: WELL I DID IT!!!! I swapped out the heater-core today and got everything back together again,Brandons right the truck is built around the damm heater-core,although i didnt test it for heat yet because the hoses in the engine compartment are still bypassing the new heater-core after i finish work tomorrow i will hook up the hoses and check it out, also the AC condensor or radiator lookin thing sitting next to the heater-core was packed full of dirt and mud and crap so i cleaned it out now maybe my ac will last for more than 20 min at a time...(advice to anyone needing to do the heater-core) .....get a 12 volt blow-dryer to defrost the windshield or sell the truck! This repair was absolutely Brutal !!

Message: Been tehre done that with the Evaporator Core next door to the heater core. I considered changing the heater while I was there JUST IN CASE but figured "why fix it if it isn't broke yet". Its been 42k since my evap core R & R and no problems...except a vacuum hose of some kind that refuses to let me run A/C on max.

Message: never did one a newer dak. i am the head technician in my shop. I have found a short cut on the full size 94-02. the dash looks like it comes off about the same way. i just drop the column, take the bolts out on top and sides. pull dash back toward seat leaving everything hooked up. take ac lines and heater hoses off, unbolt unit and remove it. can do it in about 1.5 hours from pulling truck in to taking it out of the shop.
