Message: There is Pinion Bearing preload.
I can't remember my value, but for example was something like 25 inch Lbs or something. With only the Pinion bolted in, you tighten the locknut little by little and turn it with the pinion shaft with a torque wrench intil it takes that much effort to turn it.
Then you put the carrier in. Set back lash.
Then apply marking compund onto the ring gear.
Spin it around a few times and examine contact pattern.
If it's way off, you got to adjust the carrier to change the depth of the ring gear into the pinion gear, or worse yet, pull the pinion apart to adjust the depth of it!
It is trial and error and can take a while.
The better you get it set, the longer it will last, and of course it will run quiet.
As long as you get it close, it shouldn't blow up or anything.
I had previsouly taken junk yard gears and swapped them into other beater Hot Rod projects and never had a problem.
I bought my Dakota gears and LSD form Accuauto.com
And paid closer attention to adjustments. Been towing many times and romping the pi$$ out of it. So far so good!
There was my mess!
You can see all of my gear swap pics right here ---> http://www.paysonarizona.net/MyProjects/ProjectDak/Project_Dakota_GearSwap.htm

Message: Oh that explains it.
Well at least you have the factory wiring. Buying a flat four adapter is easy.
