Subject: heads on 5.9vs5.2 IP: Logged
Message: will the heads off a 318 work on a 360? i know it is kinda stupid to do that but i have a truck with a cracked head and i have a 318 with good heads. so if it would work please reply

Message: Magnum 318 and 360 heads are the same. However, the 318 Magnum heads have ever-so-slightly larger valves, while 360 Magnums retain the same valve sizes as the 360LA. If anything a 360 Magnum will breathe just a hair better with the 318 Magnum heads. You are talking about Magnum heads, yes?

did you have a lot of miles on the 360 magnum when you cracked the head? 3 out 4 people that i knew that had the 360 cracked a head.

Message: the 5.2 magnum cam has slightly more lift and duration than the 5.9 cam. magnum heads, either the 5.2 or 5.9 version (both identical) kick ass because of the velocity charge of the intake port.

You can't prove it by me but some people claim that the 5.2 gives the 5.9 a little added performance.

Message: The 360 Magnum has .410" gross lift while the 318 Magnum has .432" lift. Again, while the heads are identical, the 318 Magnum has 1.916" intake and 1.624" exhaust valves, the 360 has 1.88" intake and 1.617" exhaust valves. While not in any way a cost-effective swap for power, your 360 will benefit slightly. As for using the same cams, Magnum cams interchange. Like the head swap, the 318 Magnum cam, especially the 1992 version, will really pep up the 360 Mag.

You're defending that?!??!
You want to keep it simple? Avoid broad, erroneous, generalizations that only serve to cloud things up that much more.
Ring end gaps and water pump output are the same, and exhaust gas temps are essentially the same (within a given range, based on a number of variables) as well.
Oh, and lets go back to your explanation as to why the heads are as good as they are. While the intake port is good, it's not that much better than the previous LA port. The major improvement goes to the exhaust port. Nothing new, since it's a copy of Mopar's 70's vintage W-2 head exhaust port. The result is a dramatically improved flow balance between intake and exhaust ports. By improving flow balance, the performance potential of the head was dramatically increased....relatively speaking. I mean, put it next to the Hemi heads, and it's not so hot, but it's a nice improvement over previous designs.
