Where's the HP bottleneck in the 3.9L?

I've heard people say that it's the largest engine / least amount of HP, blah blah..

Anyway, they've got a point.. but where's the bottleneck on the HP? on a stock 3.9L, what do you have to free up?

Compared to other 4.0Ls of the same generation, it's incredibly slow.

I think the main issue is that Dakotas are very heavy trucks and the engine is just too small to be pulling that kind of weight around.

The LA 3.9 cam is miniscule, the Magnum cam a bit better, but not great. The Magnum heads are good for around 300HP in stock form on the 3.9. It could definitely be amped up. It's just not a very aggressive setup. Needs better cam and induction for starters....and it is a deceptively heavy truck.

i agree with the tame stock cam, and the heads. but whats the compression we are working with on the 3.9L? in the low 8 range??

If you put some high compression domed 5.2L pistons in there, that should make a nice difference in power. weight is also a big factor. if you put a 3.9L in a ranger/s10, it would likely be a screamer! not to mention, have better fuel eceonomy :-)
just my .02

I looked around a little on the web and i am seeing 9.1 compression ratio for the 3.9 v6.

anyone know how high you can go and still use regular unleaded?

a 3.9 in a s10 would still be slower then a s10 with a 4.3

Don't forget that HP isn't everything. Compare the torque numbers, too.

4.0L
180 HP @ 4750
220 ft.lbs @ 4000

3.9L
175 HP @ 4400
225 ft.lbs @ 3200

Not that far off.

I'm just saying that it's unfair to write the 3.9 off as the biggest for the least.
