i have a 2000 3.9v6 dakota . just the other day the engine light went on for some reason. i looked under the hood ,checked everything and seems to be ok. but the light is still on could somebody please help me?

try this... without cranking the truck turn the igniton on-off-on-off-on. it should tell you the code(s) in the odomiter (it will say "P done" if theres no codes) I have heard that some trucks do it and some don't (my 00 does, my 98 did not....)
if you get a code, post it and we can help!

reset pcm, either disconnect + terminal from battery for about 60 seconds or unplug the pcm connection nearest the firewall for about 15 seconds. see if code disappears. if not, could be a small vacuum leak in the system.

I had the same problem
What it is is a hose for your evap system actually has a leak it is a hole the size of the end of a straw
Take it to dodge and tell them to fix it is not your gas cap i went through the same thing for about 1 month before i found it
Any Questions just holla back
