Subject: Make 3rd gear faster? IP: Logged
Message: What can I do to make my 3rd gear actually run?
I have a 2002 3.9 CC 4x4 Dak Sport....I have 40 series flowmaster with a y pipe, jet stage 2, homebrew cold air with 9" K&N, just purchased a 50mm tb.
My first and second gears run real well, so much as I can stay up with my friends mustang..I hold first til 26-28mph (5k rpm), shift to second and it squeels then hold second to around 53-55mp (5-5.5k rpm) and then I go into 3rd and it takes forever to get from 55-80, (equivelant of 2-3k rpm) when I hit about the 3.5k 4k rpm range, it starts going and I start moving from 80-93mph...4th gear has no power unless I am over 80mph, and usually it's still not enough power to get me going so I end up just skipping 4th and going to 3rd.
I'm trying to get my 1/4 into the low 16's, but 3rd gear is killing me. Of course I'm not looking to spend a lot of money, so when my 50mm tb comes in the mail, I am going to take off my intake manifold and port it with my die grinder like intensedak did. I have the pictures bookmarked, so I should be able to do that.
Is there anything below 100 that I can do to get it working? I was thinking msd ignition, or some 3293 autolites, but I don't really know what they do. And I run 92-93 octane at all times, and castrol syntec oil. I can't be waiting for weeks at a time for amsoil, because I go through 3,000 miles about once a month.
The truck has 42k miles on it.

Message: different rear end ratio would change things..
What is it now ? 3.21 ?
3.55 or 3.92 would give 3rd and 4th more action.

Message: You just need more horsepower. Theres not much you can do to make it pull hard in third for anywhere near $100. Btw, why do you run 93 octane gas? Unless you have modified you engine for higher compression or have advanced the timing a whole lot 93 octane will give you less power, its much harder to ignite and burn than 87 octane.

Message: I agree with ?, 3.92s should help you out a LOT.. its going to be pretty pricey, since you have a 4x4.. that tb should help you in the top end, but if it's a true 50MM it will KILL your low end (it may even give you a stumble off idle)
just my .02

Message: Ok I'm going to question your gear ratio, because that can't be a 3:55 gear ratio setup...
I've got a 5 speed with a 3:21 rear gear setup and it tachs as follows ---
1st - 30 mph at 5300
2nd - 55 mph at 5300
3rd - 93 mph at 5300
Don't know about forth simply because of speed limiter thingy and the nice ticket I would get if a cop were to see me...
As you can see these are pretty much the same numbers you are coming up with...
The only things I can say that could possibly help you are ---
more power, 3:91 or lower geared ratio such as 4:10, or the T56 6 speed which from everthing I've heard from the people running them in their dak's, they were much closer geared and were excellent tranny's, but the last guy I talked to who was designing them for the V6's said it was going to run around $4000 to $5000, but that was for the whole kitten caboodle, so I'm sure you won't go that route, so more power or lower gearing should do the trick
Not sure what exactly you could do for under $100 though... Parts seem to be very pricy along with everything else these days...
