Subject: Radiator Fan runs after Engine shutoff IP: Logged
Message: Last night after a 1.5 hour ride home from work in the 90 degree heat. My radiator fan stayed running even after I shut off the ignition. Nothing else was running. It ran for several hours before I finally had to disconnect the battery cable so it wouldn't drain the battery over night. Any suggestions on what might cause this.

Message: It is a 2000 V6 3.9L. I replaced the engine about a year ago and the dashboard temp gauge has never worked since then.(sensor problem I think) Coolant levels were fine. I am pretty familiar with overheating symptoms and this instance had none of them. It simply seemed as if the fan was stuck in the "ON" position.
I am stumped!

Message: just guessing but it would seem whatever is sensing the temp of
the water and relaying it to the brains in the fan is defective, a
shorted wire perhaps too?

Message: Concur - it's common for the fan relays to stick on MoPars. Tap it, or swap it with another identical P/N relay underhood. Usually the A/C relay is the same P/N. Fixed mine for free this way.

Message: I had a fan relay break on an 88 K-car, and it stayed on continuously. I had to replace the relay.

Message: It may just stick from non-use. I drive highway miles, so it almost never closed. Finally when it did, it stuck closed. I swapped it with the A/C relay, which was often cycled, and each has worked great in its new location for 7 years. Free repair.

Message: I was having the same problem on the same truck (2000 3.9) and removed the radiator fan relay to stop it from draining the battery. After I replaced the relay the fan will not start and the engine light comes on. I've tried relays that I know work and no change.
