Subject: rear-end gear ratios? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 98' V6 4X4 Club Cab. I was wondering what gear ratios were available for that year? What does a "daily driver" ratio compared to a "tow package" ratio look like? 3.91, 3.55??? Higher number for towing or driving(fuel-economy)? Thanks guys, this message board ROCKS!

Message: 4.10 will really improve exceleration, but hurt the top end and the gas. Daily driver go with 3.90

Message: You have to find out what gear ratio you have in the
front. They have to match.

Message: What is the best way to find out what the gear ratio is? My Dakota has no tags or stickers that say what the ratio is. I do know that it is either a 3.55 or a 3.9. But my rear end is out. I found a tab that was on a bolt on the cover that has 3.5 stamped on it. If anyone has any information, please let me know.
Thanks to all,
Stage.

Message: Give your truck's VIN# to the dealer's parts guy and he'll print you a "run-down" of the stuff that came with your truck when it was new, INCLUDING the rear end ratio.

Message: The 3.5 means its a 3:55 gear. If you have the front it should also be 3.5 then you will know. I think what happens is some one will change the gear oil and just lose or trash the tag. Also, if you take the rear cover off, clean the ring gear, (That's the big round gear) it will also have the ratio stamped on it as well. That was how I figured out that 3.5 is 3.55. Good luck

Want to improve my mileage. It appears that the differential has a 3.9 gear ratio. Since it will be used for highway driving and little around town. No towing. Also when driving I find it easier to skip shift rather than go through all five gears.
