Subject: Oil pressure guage? IP: Logged
Message: '03 Dak, 3.9l.
Is the oil pressure gauge a true pressure guage or just a fancy idiot light?
Mine shows the same reading all the time, hot or cold, low or high rpm.

Message: It's a gauge, not an idiot light. The sending unit is located next to the distributor and it reads the pressure and sends it to the computer. The computer shows the pressure via the gauge.
What pressure is it at?
Does it move at all (idle, redline, off)?

Message: Mine never moves either. Regardless of engine RPM, it sits right between the two extreme tick marks. Come to think of it, it may not even have numbers on it!

Message: Mine moves some... especially when my oil is almost due for a change. when the engine is cold, it stays way up past 40. When it’s warmed up and has been at idle for about 5-10 mins, it drops just a hair below 40. I’m not worried about it though, my book says 6 psi is the min curb idle pressure! By the way, my dak just turned over the 53K mark (98 rc auto 2wd) oh and did I mention that i use AMSOIL!!!! :-)

Message: My '03 3.9l does not have any numerals on the gauge, just a couple of lines that indicate a normal pressure.
I had a 94 Mazda B-4000, 4.0L that had the same type gauge and it was not a true pressure gauge, just an indication that there was some oil pressure but not how much.(fancy idiot light)
Anyone know if changing out the sensor would give a true reading or is it the gauge itself(or both) that would need changing in order to get a true pressure reading.
No way a true pressure gauge would read the same with the engine hot or cold and at different rpm.

Message: i have a 98 cc with 195000 on it. Oil gauge goes up on start up. at idle speed it is just slightly below half and at normal road speed its at about 3/4 of the gauge.

Message: Hi guys,
Heard this story several times on this forum and experienced it for myself once.
If you have any questions, or if your"true" idiot light goes on, put in a mechanical gauge temporarily to see if your oil pressure is sufficiant. I did this just recently, it saved me from taking out the oil pump. It seems the sending units eventually get full of junk and won't show any pressure at all.
It's a common problem and an easy fix only cost me about $30 and a half hours time.
