Subject: 2004 Dakota - Pop noise from below? IP: Logged
Message: I have recently bought a 2004 Dakota Quad-Cab. Standard trans. V6. Base model truck. No options.
I have noticed a pop noise after I start the truck up. However it pops at different times. A few times after I backed out of the driveway and start to go. Other times while driving down the street a few min after starting the truck. And also while just sitting in natural with the emergency brake on. It allways happens just after starting up the truck. It is very strange.
I have read that previous models have pops. Turned out to be a ball joint problem, motor mount bolt or a loose housing assembly. But this is a spanking new one. 4 miles on it when I got it.
Anyhow I will be taking it in to the dealer soon. Just thought I would post to see if anyone else has run across this on the 2004s. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Message: LV, I have just purchased a new 03 reg cab manual v6, and I too have this "pop" it happens for me alot when I shift gears, so natuarally I thought it was a tranny issue, however reading your post makes me think i could have the same issue going on... my lead foot and mashing the clutch cause enough of a lunge to make the joints pop i guess, because I also noticed this when turning into my driveway too hard as well... let me know, i have about 2500 miles on it now and was thinking of going to the dealer for this, to at least have it documented if nothing else.

Message: i have a way older 88 dakota recently rebuilt and reconditioned. after i rebuilt it and had the dealership set it to stock standards i had the popping noise as well when i turned the wheel. So i took it to work with me put it on a lift and found the top control arm of the A-frame was loose and not bolted down properly. try getting your alignment readjusted and see what it does.
PS i used to work at a dealership in my honest opinion their THE WORST place to go

Message: My 04 RC SXT was making a popping sound when making a hard right turn on a hill. It seemed to be coming from right under the drivers side seat. I found that the cab mount located just below the driver seat was loose. Go figure??? I torqued it back to spec (60 ft lbs) and checked the rest which were fine. Popping noise cured. Just an FYI on that wonderful DC quality control.

Message: My '04 SXT 5spd does the same thing, maybe once a week. I took it to the dealer, and of course they said all was good and tight underneath. U can feel it right under your feet in the cab.
