Subject: 3.9 modifications IP: Logged
Message: I want to step up my 1995 v-6 extended cab and would like some feedback. I talked to the Hughes guys and got a catalog. I understand that I should first invest in a cold air system. I have the old style round air cleaner, should I just intall a k & n type of filter? What about the Intake air temp sensor? Next is the modified throttle body. Anyone use one of the Hughes TBs?
This truck is a 5-speed and I love it's low end torque. I was thinking about a Keisler pistol grip handle too.

Message: from everyone says around the 3.9's most of then time is get the exhuast first. just change the muffler dont get the whole system.
they say it frees up a good bit of power cause the stock one is soooo restrictive

I have a 1992 V6 extended cab w/ a 5spd. If you can afford it go with the f&b throttle body, I found a regular V-8 throttle body works great and is in my budget.
Look up a few of the posts on here in regards to your intake; coldair vs k&n high flow. I'm useing a k&n unit(14x4 in) and an x-stream cover, LOTS of air volume! You could also add ford injectors, a good ignition system, better spark plugs, bigger wires and the cap and rotor upgrade.

Message: I'm just curious if anyone has tried to convert a set of 5.2L V8 headers for their pre-magnum V6? I've read several posts and they've talked about using the gaskets from a V8 for the V6 by cutting off the unneeded end. Provided the header shape allowed them to clear the accessories and/or subframe, couldn't the same be done to the headers? Just remove the unneeded end pipe and weld the hole in the collector closed. Hell, I suppose you could even weld in an O2 sensor mount. Any thoughts and/or has anyone done this?

Message: Which muffler would you recommend? Is it the same length, just a swap out? I remember reading something about a Dynomax muffler. Where do I find info on the F&B throttle body? Has anyone used the aftermarket Holley TB? How about the Hughes? To TOMZ, did you replace the air filter pan to? My stock filter is only like 10" in diameter. I wonder if the engine likes the cold air from the radiator core support more than from an open filter at the throttle body? I bought some Mopar Performance plug wires for the V6 but they are scrawney 7mm. I wish I would have measured the resistance as compared to the original ones, I bet it was pretty close. Does MSD make a set of Super Conductors for the v6? What about ignition module? Is there anything out there to replace the original?

Message: the muffler u should get would be a personal opinion question, people say they like the dyno max but that was to quiet imo, i put a flowmaster 40 series on mine only beucase i wanted the truck to be loud, since its a attention whore. all the mufflers sound like garbage only because its on a v6 :( the F&B is sopost to be the best tb out for our trucks. msd makes 8mm wires for our trucks, just go to summitracing.com u can find them there. taylor also makes 8mm wires for our trucks adn there 25$ cheaper and do the same. Msd makes a after market ignition for our trucks, most people use the msd 6a with a blaster ss coil. the coil. imo the open element filter wont help you at all ( well not as much as it should) if you dont have a cowl hood cuz u would just be suckin in hot air. so i would just whip up a home brew cold air intake, with a K&N filter on the end and be all set with it.

Message: Ok I really hate to bring this back into the subject spot light but heres my understanding of TBs 95 and older are EGR, 96 and newer are not. I have a 2001 V6 RC 5spd. I can get a TB off an 94 5.9L B350 cargo van.
My question is what is the difference between the EGR one and the non-EGR, I don't see any difference. no extra vacuum lines, wires, sensors, or ports.

Message: You need a tb off of a 96 thru 2003 v8. The older ones won't idle right.
'98 cc auto /Home brew cold air with K&N,Dynomax, Superchip Tuner, 1.7 RR,, F&B tb. NAPA cap and rotor, 3923 plugs,relocated iat, 180 t'stat, Crankshaft sensor mod.

there are a couple different types of headers for premags. I have seen a couple shorties and even some long tube headers.
i cant remember where i saw the long tube headers but i know that summitracing carries the shorties.. i think made by edelbrock.

Message: I've seen some listings for "shorty" headers also but they are no longer in stock nor can they be backordered. Even if they were available they usually cost twice as much as V8 headers (which really makes no sense to me). As far as long tube, I haven't seen any for my application. I'd really like long tube for the torque and mileage gains they give you on the bottom end since most of what I do with my truck is towing/hauling or just normal everyday type driving. I do know that the early V6's are basically the 318ci engine with the two front cylinders lopped off which is what gave me the idea of modifying the V8 long tube headers to fit. I might have to pick up a used set just to try this on but I was hoping that maybe someone already had done this before I potentially waste my money.
