Message: ok guys, I need help or some light shown on this situation I have... got my incometax check woohoo!!, bought stuff for my truck, 2000 3.9, 125,000 miles...2nd owner. I start my truck in the morning around 50* outside and let it warm up for about 5 min. go to drive it, and pop lag pop lag pop lag... this sucks, when I accelerate to get onto the highway it backfires. This pisses me off. Now what I want to do is change the plug wires and distributor cap and rotor, but I went to parts store, and the guy said there isn't a distributor cap for me truck....what? I was totally confused, especially since I put in a search for one on this site and up pop links, like the napa caps... someone give me the stock number for a distributor cap on a 2000 3.9, and if this doesn't fix the problem help me someone. and what kid of wires do I get, cheapos, or what brand. where???

Message: Freak, go to napa and get dist cap and rotor part #'s MO26 and MO28. or go to an Autozone and get the brass rotor and cap from them. As far as wires are concerned get a good 8 or 8.5 mm wire. Get the msd if you can afford them! You better replace those plugs too!
Try checking two things your 02 sensors and your plenum gasket. If you look thru the posts here you'll find lots of info on both these things.
wish you luck.

Message: wow 125k! if thats the stock cap rotor wires and plugs, the cap and rotor have got to be toast. (wires and plugs too)i burned up a cap and rotor in 12k,with a hotter coil for about
9k of that (with platnum plugs, bad idea...) the stocker lasted about40k (before new accell coil)
changed it. Then the wells one from zone lasted me 12k before it burned up. so now i'm trying the napa with brass contacts. hope it holds up better.
just my .02

Message: it might have been a missfire code, mine did that once after an over zealous car washing. It ran like $hit until the water evaporated. but, if you have faulty wires and/or a carbon tracked cap the same thing can happen. the wires can "leak" current and the cap can randomly ground causing misfires.
i dont have any insight about the msd stuff, i just bought an accell performance coil from jegs and an adapter for it around $65 total. performance wires have a lower resistance value than stockers and flow more current.
and for info on the plenum pan gasket, here: http://www.speedtweaks.ca/tipsandtricks.php
hope i helped

Message: The problem you are describing seems to be valve timing related and or ignition timing. The ignition timing is non-adjustable on these trucks so dont attempt to rotate the distributor, if you do that what you are adjusting is the fuel sync. If your fuel sync is off backfiring can occur, but i dont think to the extent you are describing. The only way to check this (fuel sync and base ignition timing) is with an appropiate scan tool with the right chips to read the chrysler computer. It sounds like you need a timing chain and tensioner not 100% on this but it sounds like your valve timing is jumping ie too much slack in the chain. There are many more things that could cause this but these are the first to come into mind, if i come up with any more ill let ya know.

Message: RRR I was hoping it wasn't that, just hearing the words "timing", and "wrong"
Ok thanks for the parts numbers on the distributor cap and rotor, got them both,
I'm going to try and change them soon.
Took a look into the o2 sensors, AAHHHH!! expensive, well to me anyways. well gonna have to put that off.
thanx guys this is helpin out alot.
oh yeah...no funny sounds just alot of lagging in the morning, but during the day, no problem.

Message: the cap and rotor can be a challenge to get to even with the air hat removed. i just remove the purge canister thingie on the firewall, and its a little easier. still a pain in the butt though. its easy to unscrew but hard to get it up past that lip under the cowl to change the wires over.
the plugs are easy if you have a universal joint and extensions for your ratchet although the one by the brake booster is still a bear....

Message: thanks guys, done it and had some better improvments. the cap was a beach, but I got it done, the old one had three of the terminals corroded, and were pretty messed up inside, the rotor was bad.
