Message: I have a '91 V6 2WD.... recently took it in for inspection and was failed for "leaking front shocks and leaking rear brake cylinders". OK - so fix it, I say.
The quote comes in at $500 all told!
Now, I'm by no means an accomplished mechanic, but I've fixed many a problem on this truck myself before. To the best of my understanding, replacing these components should be a short-order business, and relatively inexpensive. Am I mistaken in believing that this is an exhorbitant sum for said repairs?
To compound matters, I (without proper forethought) told my mechanic to go ahead with repairs before coming to the realization that I would be crazy not to attempt it myself first. So now I'm commited to the fees.
So, at least it will be done "right" this time, but in the fututre, should I always consider do-it-yourself repairs and consultation to this board first?
You guys have helped with minor things before and you all seem quite sensible and friendly.
Thanks for listening to me rant.

Message: Humm..Shocks 25-50$ a piece
Wheel cylinders 20-40$ a piece..
at the high side 180.00 for parts.
320 Labor..
Time wise.
When I was a working mechanic..
2 front shocks 10 minutes
2 wheel cylinders 1/2 hour..
I think they took you for a ride..
Did you get your old parts????
When I lived in PA..A lot of Inspection stations were less than honest...

Message: thanks tazzy.... wasn't sure what i was getting into. the funny thing is that i have trusted the shop that i have been using for over 8 years. i've just gone over my records - in a cohesssive manner - and have found that NOT ONCE have they given me a fair deal. I had assumed that this particular station was "doing right by me"... but I have since come to the conclusion that I can trust no-one but myself.
We live and learn by our mistakes....
