Subject: Help! Code P0443
IP: Logged

Message:
I started receiving a Check Engine light today. Took it to Autozone and it came back with code "P0443 - The PCM has determined that a malfunction exists in the electrical circuit for the purge control valve in the evaporative emission control system."

Has anybody else ever experienced this code? If so, was it the evap canister or the actual purge control valve. I would like to just get the part without having to fork over a bunch of cash for Dodge to tell me which part it is.

Thanks,
Brian

Posible causes

Bad or lose gas cap
Also check the conections and hoses on the
canistor near the frame drivers side under hood
and than see if the code returns, if you follow
the small vac lines back you will also find a
elec purge solonoid, there is a little vent on
there you also need to check connections and
vac lines.

If that don't do it replace the valve

Thanks Larry. Gas cap looks ok. I checked all of the lines and they look ok. Going to pickup a new purge valve from the dealer tonight. Do I have to reset the computer to have the check engine light go away, or will it go away automatically if the problem is fixed?

Thanks,
Brian

gas cap can "look good" and still leak, if you did not actcually do a vacumm test on it you may just be spending good money on the wrong part. In cases like these you cannot tell if something is faulty or not by lokking at it, it must be tested. Try borrowing a cap from someone that is not having the problem, then reset your PCM and drive around for a half hour or so, if the code does not trip the MIL, THEN it is the cap. if the MIL does trip THEN it is the purge valve, only reliable way to "look at it"

Thats a good idea if you can find someone to lend
you there gas cap.

The mil light will not come back on unless the
trouble code is triped again and will remove
itself from the comp after 21 cycles

really no need to do a hard reset

had my engine light come on today, called the dealer, they said check the gas cap, make sure it's on good, then the light should go out within 4 cold starts. if it doesn't bring it in. great, now hopefully that's all it is and nothing blows up. ah well, it's under warranty

Larry, check this out. Took it to have the dealer look at it. They said there was a short in the wiring for my cd changer that ties in to the seat belt chime, which shares a fuse with the EVAP system. They advised me that the fuse was blown because of this short. Are they feeding me a line of bull? Electical components are not my strong suit. My Alpine cd changer is mounted to the back of the drivers' side seat and plugs directly into the back of my factory radio with a single cable, under all of the carpeting. My radio was working while this fuse was blown. I did not see a blown fuse anywhere, but I'm not sure which fuse is even the EVAP fuse. Charged me $170 to "fix" it. I want to make sure I'm not getting ripped here.

Thanks in advance,

Brian

Nevermind...I'm a putz. I pulled my seats out on Sunday to fix the 2 springs that popped off. When I put the seats back in I probably nicked a wire or something, somehow. The check engine light came on first thing Monday morning. That was the first time I started the truck since putting the seats back in. This was a real learning experience! :) Still confused on how that ties to the EVAP system. Oh well!

Its not hard to beleave anything these days they
do some strange things,

We had one with a door ajar light blown out and
a bad switch killing the batt so nothing surprizes
me anymore, if the light would have worked it
would not have taken us 3 days to find this.

As they say go figure

No they are not. To save some future headaches, the seatbelt chime wire under the driver's seat may have dislodged and gets pinched or shorted on the seat slide rail, or debris inside the seatbelt latch. So east fix...unplug it under the seat, reset the MIL and see if that's it. This will become a common problem as these trucks get older.

hmm...my seatbelt chime doesn't even work. It's all plugged in properly, but I don't get a light/chime if my seatbelt isn't fastened. I always wear my seatbelt though so it wouldn't bug me regardless.

I have an 04 dakota quad cab 4.7. I continue to get the P0456 CODE indicating a small leak detected in evap sys. I have installed a new (factory) gas cap. I have reset the mil by removing one of the eng. fuses under the hood and after approx. a week the light comes back on. I have checked everything visibly in the evap. system and am at my wits end.

I have a 2005 Dakota 4.7 liter engine and I have had this code for sometime now. Shop replaced the valve on top of the gas tank, I have replaced the gas cap, and the solenoid on the back fire wall and hard reset with code reader from Auto Zone and the fault came back after about 10 miles of driving. Now I need to find a diagram for the wiring to check this out but have no ideal where to find a diagram. Anyone with suggestions??
