Subject: 1996 overdrive problem IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1996 Dakota, V6, with 123,000 miles. The other day on the way home from work the overdrive just stopped working. The overdrive off switch on the dash will not work also, but it does have power to it. I can restart the truck and make the overdrive off switch light up, but it doesn't matter either way, the tranny still will not kick into overdrive. Other than that it shifts just fine. Any auggestions before I take it in. I don't want to have to put in a rebuilt tranny unless absolutely necessary.

Message: You may have a truck that is equiped with the
trans temp sensor and if it goes bad and reads
cold it will never drop O/D
look in the trans cooling line near the radiator
its a sensor with 2 wires on it right in the line
If you do a new sensor is $6 to $8
Also check all the elec connections on the trans
Or hit an autozone and have it scaned for free.
