Subject: 87 Dakota Tranny, time to rebuild it?

Is it time to rebuild? I have a 1987 3.9 v6 Dak, 2 wheel drive auto trans. 140k miles. Truck was off the road (garaged) for about a year. Put it back on 4 mos ago. It was slipping a little so I had the fluid changed and a new filter. This cleared up the problem till recently. About a month ago it started slipping from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd when it was cold. By slipping I mean it would begin to rev and then finally shift up to the next gear. If I accelerated slowly, or let the car warm up, the problem didnt occur, it would shift up thru the gears ok. About two weeks ago the slow acceleration bit stopped working, it wont shift up from 1st to 2nd, or from 2nd to 3rd. If I drop it into drive 2, It'll shift fine (no slip at all in drive 2) up to about 35 or 40mph and then I can usually drop back into drive and it'll shift up to 3rd, 4th ect... if I fall below 45mph, and try to re accelerate, it wont shift up, just revs...then I drop it back into drive 2, etc... you get the picture.

So the question is, am I doomed to a rebuild at this point or will some simple band adjustments and a quart of TRAN X maybe get me back in shape?

It hasnt leaked in the 4mos since the fluid was changed.

Hey, it dosent hurt to ask. Thanks Much...

I had the same problem about 1yr ago, and I found out that I had completely blown out 2nd gear and that it had to be rebuilt. I don't think that a bottle of trans conditioner will help you there man. Sorry about your luck. All I can say is that I have been there and done that.

Yeah... It does sound like you really could be in for a rebuild... but hey, whats $5 for a bottle of trans. cond. gonna hurt? it's worth a shot before you fork over a grand for a rebuild...

Good luck.
