What is a good aftermarket ignition system, for a 93 Dakota. Mine is a regular cab 3.9 V6 5 spd. It has 143,000 miles and has stock ignition. I think i would like to upgrade at least the coil. I am running Bosch platinum tip plugs. Would a hotter spark smooth out arough idle?

a fan of msd products, they have never done me wrong, id say get the 6a with a blaster coil...or what ever coil is best 4 these trucks

6a and SS Blaster is a great set up for these
trucks and easy to instal using just the 2
exsisting coil wires and +12 volt and ground
If you are running the plat tip bosch open the
gap .005 more than stock or your spark will be
to hot and that may also be your idle prob.
Plat has less resistance and will run hot at
stock gap

Thanks for the information on the plug gap i will open them up as soon as i can. I have never heard of these ignition systems. Can they be purchased at most auto parts stores or is online a better way to go. Thanks again

I know checker auto Parts America has them and a
few others.
If you go to thr MSD box and MSD coil you will
need to first get better wires it will destroy the
stock wires in no time. MSD for same year Dak 5.2
will fit perfict just have 2 wires left.
Also you will need to open the gap to .060 with
the MSD system to get the gains of the system
summitracing.com has the MSD systems online and
is a great company to deal with
6a MSD mutistrike box MSD SS Blaster coil and MSD
wires, stay away from Jacobs Ign and accel coils
they do not hold up

i just finished the install, and it is worth it. picked up a whole system 6a/blaster ss and new AP 3923's plugs, borg and warner cap and rotor. And already had the msd 8.5mm wires.
it was definatly worth the upgrade. All for less then $200. I am lookinf forward to the MPG improvement too. I will update when i know how much my mpg went up.

I have the Jacobs energy pak on mine. It's pretty much overkill but I really like it. You will be very happy with the MSD.

There are some very respectfull posts up there. MSD is a great system. Search MSD's website. Another alternative besides MSD and Jacobs is Accel 300+ digital ignition system. Accel is not as popular as MSD but a simpler plug and play. I'm not sure if it is better than MSD and a little more expensive. Most of the dak owners here prefer Autolite 3923 spark plugs vs the Bosch Plat. I'm sure if you follow Larry's advice, it will definitely help. Good luck.

So Larry when you mean 6a you are talking about MSD-6A Ignition Control for $149.88 and E-core windings, Blaster SS coil for $35.95,on Summit's web site. I just bought a 99 V6 3.9 4X4 Ext. Cab and I am trying to up the MPG's, Man they suck!!! So would this be a good thing to start with?

you do not need the tach adapter, sure it will throw a code but it wont really show up. no check engine light will come on. so why spend the extra cash?

OK, question for you all knowing gods of the V6. I'm in high school and my automotive teacher was explaining something about the ignition system. Well i asked him about goin from the stock wires to say an MSD 8.5mm setup....He was saying that that would not make a difference because it would still send the same voltage, but now it just has a bigger "highway" to run on....What is the purpose of the bigger wires? I wanna run the 3923s, new wires, coil, everything to pull the power that i know this truck has. Thanks.....

The MSD 8.5 mm wires serve 2 purposes:
1. The lower resistance allows more current to flow to the spark plugs. Stock wires can be any where from 1500 to 15000 ohms per foot depending on manufacturer.
2. The thicker wires have a higher resistance to electrical breakdown. The stock wires will arc-over at lower voltages than the MSD wires. They are designed to be used with a high out ignition system such as an MSD 6a, while making as much voltage available to the spark plug.
3. Follow Larry's advised go with the MSD 6a, SuperCoductor Wires, Blaster SS Coil, NAPA Cap and Rotor with Brass inserts and Autolite 3923's gapped at .045in. or Autolite AP3923 gapped at .060 running the complete MSD setup.

Yes MSD 6a E core SS Blaster coil and a good set
of wires will help.
Go with the AP3923's at .060, I just tried a set
of AP5224's in the stock motor I am running with
just a 48mm F&B JBA headers carsound and dynomax
and seen the 24's were just to hot went back to
the AP3923 runs better and the plugs are tan not
white
The AP 5224 run fine with a stock ign but not with
the MSD

yeah, got a lot more get up and go. my old plugs were set at .45 and they were just the regular 3923's. Now with the AP3923's at .60 and the msd setup it pulls a lot harder now.
just a tip, when buying the ap3923's at walmart, buy the ap3923's that come in the regular a3923 packaging. It will save you a couple bucks.

Do you buy the plugs gapped, or do you have to do it yourself? and how is this done if so?
Also, should i do the ignition system first, or just plugs, or does it matter? The route i'm choosing to take is: Exhaust, intake/throttle body, ignition system....and then anything else i can do for performance....
Dont have much money to do it all at once, so i have to ration it out

You need to gap them yourself, takes about 5 minutes with the gap tool you can buy at a parts store.
Go with the 3923s and brass c/r first then intake and exhaust. An aftermkt ignition system should be your very last mod.

Prizefyter, i took the advice from larry to gap them at .60
I am using the autolite platniums at .60, he suggested if you use the regular 3923's then you need to gap them at .50
I also am running a msd ignigtion kit.
