Subject: what is better? IP: Logged
Message: I was thinking about changing my 3.55 gears to a 3.92.
I have a couple of concerns though....
How would that affect the life of my transmission? Would it make a difference when I am hauling stuff? Would I lose some tork?
Thanks for your help.

Message: You would get more power to the wheels with 3.91
over 3.55 and less strain on the trans to do the
same work
The motor would run about 300 rpm higher getting
you into your power band quicker giving you better
excelleration

Message: You can buy new richmond 3.91 gears for around
$230 instalation kit around $100 but you cant just
bolt them in you need to set the pinion height and
preload the carrier or they will be noisy and not
last.
What I did was bought the whole rear ends with a
3.91 sure grip for $500 for both and bolted the
whole assy right in. It was cheaper than buying
2 sets of gears and installing them
Ryan has them listed on his site.

If your motor is running up to snuff I would say
around .5 on 1/4 mile time depending on the truck
some a little more some a little less, no 2 trucks
will be the same all react a little differant to
any mods you do

Message: Wow.... So, there really is not any downfall to getting the 3.91 gears over the 3.55 then. What about gas milage? I would imagine that it would go down a little since the rpm's are going up.
